WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point scored 58 points in the first half and the Lakeland University women's basketball team took a 101-64 loss at the UW-Whitewater Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.
The Pointers maintained better than 60% shooting through the first three quarters and were in control almost the entire way of the non-conference game. Lakeland was unable to slow UWSP's offense and also struggled with turnovers in the season opener for both teams.
UW-Stevens Point made 13 of its first 21 shots in building a 29-12 lead after the first 10 minutes, and then put up another 29 points in the second quarter on its way to a 58-26 halftime lead. The Pointers shot 53.7% in the first half (22 of 41) and also posted a 21-0 advantage in points off turnovers after the Muskies committed 14 turnovers in the first half to just four for Point.
Stevens Point would add to the lead in the third quarter and was ahead by as much as 44 points at 78-34. The Muskies did keep fighting and won the final 10 minutes, outscoring UWSP 24-19 in the final period as freshman
Peyton Madl (
New Lenox, Ill.) came off the bench to score 11 points, including three three-pointers.
A.T. Bartlett (
Jr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) led Lakeland with 13 points and
Jenna Shea (
So.-Appleton, Wis.) added seven points.
Jenna Caterino (
Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) paced the team with six rebounds. The Muskies received contributions up and down the lineup, as a total of 12 players scored.
Lakeland finished shooting 38.5% (20 of 52), including making 7 of 15 from three-point range, though five of the seven made triples came in the second half. The Muskies also posted a slight advantage over the Pointers at the free throw line, attempting and making more from the line while shooting 68% (17 of 25).
Karissa Smith led UWSP with 18 points, making 7 of 11 from the field including 4 of 6 from long range. The Pointers finished shooting 52.6% (40 of 76) and posted advantages of 60-22 in the paint and 31-9 in points off turnovers.
Lakeland's assignment on Saturday is no easier as it takes on host school UW-Whitewater, ranked No. 4 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Preseason Poll. Game time against the Warhawks is set for 1 p.m.
