ROCKFORD, Ill. –
Emmitt Konieczny (
Fr.-Marshfield, Wis.) and
Parker Braun (
So.-Brillion, Wis.) scored career highs and five players scored in double figures as the Lakeland University men's basketball team upended Rockford University 80-73 Wednesday night on the road at the Seaver Center.
The Muskies earned their second win of the season and second in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, improving to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in conference. Both wins have come on the road, where Lakeland is now 2-2 this season including a victory at Dominican University 11 days earlier.
The Muskies were in control almost the whole way against the Regents (7-3 overall, 2-2 NACC), only trailing briefly as the teams traded baskets in the game's early stages. Lakeland took the lead for good just over six minutes in and led by as much as 11 in the first half and by 14 in the second half.
The Muskies made 30 of 54 field goals to shoot a season-best 55.6% for the game, more than 12% above Rockford's defensive field goal percentage average coming in. Lakeland also held the Regents to 43.3% shooting (26 of 60) for its best defensive effort of the season.
Isaiah Hammond (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) converted a layup with 13 minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the first half to give Lakeland a 14-12 lead. The Muskies would eventually lead by as much as 41-30 late in the first half after a layup by
Cliff McCray (
Sr.-Madison, Wis.), and carried a 41-34 lead into halftime.
Rockford made a three-pointer to start the second half but would never get closer than four the rest of the way. Lakeland pulled away with a 9-0 run midway through the half, capped by Braun hitting a short jumper to make it 65-51 with 8:26 to play.
Hammond scored 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds and McCray added 16 points. Konieczny also scored 13 points, including three three-pointers, and both Braun and
Gage Cornell (
Jr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) added 12 points each. Braun made 5 of 6 shots from the field off the bench, including a pair of three-pointers, and also added seven rebounds.
Jaden Bell scored 14 points and Micah Swanson added 13 points plus 17 rebounds for the Regents, who outrebounded Lakeland 37-29.
The Muskies are on the road again Friday when they travel to face Loras College at 1 p.m. in Dubuque, Iowa.
