Muskies finish weekend road trip with four-set loss at Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Jordan Davis-Troller (So.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) set a career high with 11 kills but the Lakeland University men's volleyball team fell to Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University in four sets Saturday night in a non-conference match.

The Tigers defeated the Muskies 25-17, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21 in the first-ever match between the schools. Lakeland came up empty in its weekend trip to Indiana and Illinois and is now 2-6 overall on the season.

The Muskies finished with 11 service aces but Olivet Nazarene (2-3 overall) was the stronger team on the attack, hitting at a .225 rate with 39 kills and 16 errors. Lakeland hit .140 for the match with 36 kills and 21 errors, with Davis-Troller leading the way from the middle with a .647 mark with his 11 kills coming without an error in 17 swings.

The Muskies were hurt by several long ONU runs in the first set but were competitive in the final three sets, and especially saw an opportunity slip away in the second set. Lakeland led 12-6 early in the set and still held a 19-15 lead when the Tigers heated up. A 9-1 run took the hosts all the way to set point, and Olivet closed the set with a kill by Jaiton Kamaunu.

Lakeland rallied to win the third set, again building an early lead and this time holding it. Davis-Troller had kills on four consecutive points as part of a 5-0 run to build a 13-5 lead, and the Muskies led by as many as 10 points on the way to winning the set comfortably.

Olivet Nazarene came back in the fourth set, taking control with an 8-3 run in the middle stages. A 10-9 set turned into an 18-12 Tigers lead after a mix of kills, Lakeland attack errors and service errors, and the Muskies only got as close as three points the rest of the way.

Colin Kenney (Sr.-Shorewood, Wis.) posted eight kills and Levi Everts (Jr.-Hartford, Wis.) added seven kills. Kenney and Alex Zamora (Sr.-Plainfield, Ill.) both posted three service aces each, Eli Weinrich (So.-Mequon, Wis.) led the defense with 16 digs and Chase Anderson (So.-Hartford, Wis.) finished with 28 assists. Jakob Donohue (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also added four blocks.

Brody McAfee finished with 14 kills and three aces for the Tigers, NAIA members of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Lakeland is back home for its next match when the Muskies host the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
