Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Muskies go to overtime again but fall to Stars 104-100

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Cam Jaeger (Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) made a tying three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime but Dominican University scored the final five points of overtime to defeat the Lakeland University men's basketball team 104-100 Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

Dominican's Joshua West converted a go-ahead three-point play with 27 seconds left in overtime and the Stars dealt the Muskies another narrow loss in a season full of them. Lakeland lost by seven points or less for the seventh time this season and dropped to 6-16 overall and 4-11 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with three regular season games remaining.

The Muskies played their fourth overtime game of the season and dropped to 2-2 in games going an extra session. Wednesday's game was yet another where Lakeland went back-and-forth all game with an opponent, with the teams combining for 17 lead changes and 15 ties, but Dominican gained a split of the season series between the teams after Lakeland won 72-69 on the road in Illinois back in December.

Lakeland trailed by three in the final seconds of regulation after a Stars free throw when Jaeger circled around the perimeter, received a pass from Asanjai Hunter (So.-Racine, Wis.) and after one dribble left pulled up from 22 feet and nailed the shot. Jaeger then came up with a steal in the backcourt to prevent the Stars from getting off a final shot, sending the game to overtime.

The teams were close throughout in overtime, with three more ties and six lead changes. Lakeland led by a point on three occasions, the last time with 38 seconds left after Kai Buliox (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) made two free throws. Dominican (10-12 overall, 7-8 NACC) answered 11 seconds later, as West drove down the lane, had the ball tied up, but recovered and went back up to score while being fouled.

West converted the free throw for the final of his game-high 31 points, and he then blocked the layup attempt of Hunter out of bounds with 14 seconds left. Lakeland kept possession, but committed a turnover with eight seconds left, and the Stars' Andre Bennett made two free throws with seven seconds to play for the game's final points.

Lakeland had a productive offensive night, shooting 47.4% (36 of 76) from the field and 22 of 26 (84.6%) from the free throw line while six players scored in double figures. The Muskies struggled to slow down the Stars, though, with the visitors shooting 55.9% (38 of 68), including 65.5% in the second half (19 of 29) plus making 4 of 7 shots in the overtime.

The teams were separated by no more than five points throughout a close first half, though Lakeland led most of the way and carried a 39-34 lead into halftime. Dominican would heat up in the second half, though, scoring 54 points and building a 79-72 lead with 3:27 left after a layup by West.

Lakeland answered with six straight points to get within one on a layup by Hunter with 2:18 left, but the Stars stayed a step ahead until the final seconds. Dominican twice split a pair of foul shots in the final 25 seconds, and the Muskies missed a first chance to tie with 17 seconds left before converting the second time on Jaeger's three.

Jaeger scored 26 points and added seven rebounds and three steals and Hunter added 16 points and seven boards. Isaiah Hammond (Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also finished with a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds as Lakeland outrebounded Dominican 43-33. Jaxson Dillon (So.-Menasha, Wis.) also scored 13 points, Buliox tallied 12 with seven rebounds and Brayden Kennedy (Fr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) added 10 points.

West scored a game-high 31 for the Stars and Robert Taylor added 17 points and seven rebounds. Dominican made 24 of 31 free throws for the game (77.4%) but was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line in overtime.

The Muskies are home again Saturday when they welcome Concordia University Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. start at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
