RIVER FOREST, Ill. –
Kerstin Sauerbrei (
Sr.-Ripon, Wis.) broke the longstanding Lakeland University women's basketball school record for career three-pointers made and the Muskies stayed hot, defeating Dominican University 83-63 on the road Wednesday night at the Igini Sports Forum.
Jenna Shea (
Fr.-Appleton, Wis.) and
Meghan MacPhee (
Fr.-Marquette, Mich.) also set career highs as Lakeland dominated from start to finish and won its fourth straight game. The Muskies improved to 8-14 overall and at 6-7 in conference are still in the thick of the race for a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament.
Sauerbrei made four three-pointers, all in the game's first 15 minutes, to tie and then surpass the former school record of 157 three-pointers made by Kristi (Thill) Bachar from 2001-06. Sauerbrei hit a triple to start off the second quarter scoring to tie Thill's record, and then drained the record-breaking three with 5 minutes, 32 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The Muskies again cranked up the offense for a night, scoring at least 76 points for the fourth straight game. Lakeland set a new season high for points and had its biggest scoring half of the season, rolling up 49 points on the way to a 49-36 halftime lead.
The Muskies never trailed in the game and led by 19 points late in the first quarter on the way to a 28-12 lead after 10 minutes. Shea scored 11 points in the first quarter on the way to 16 points for the game to set her career scoring high for the second straight game.
Dominican (1-21 overall, 0-13 NACC) hung around in the second quarter by making 9 of 17 shots, including four three-pointers, but Lakeland put the game away quickly in the third quarter. The Muskies went on a 16-0 run over a stretch of just over three minutes, and MacPhee's layup gave Lakeland a 67-39 lead with 5:15 left in the quarter.
The Muskies would lead by as many as 33 points late in the third and led 75-45 after three periods. Lakeland substituted freely in the fourth period and saw the Stars with a shorter roster and starters playing to near the end cut the lead down as low as 17.
Shea made 7 of 10 shots from the field and added four rebounds while Sauerbrei finished with 15 points. MacPhee also set career highs with 14 points and nine rebounds, making 6 of 12 from the field and also pulling down six offensive rebounds.
Lauryn Johnson (
So.-Kenosha, Wis.) also added five points and eight rebounds off the bench, and 13 different players scored for Lakeland and all 14 players in uniform grabbed at least one rebound as the Muskies finished with a 50-40 rebounding advantage.
Kameron Goodman finished with game highs of 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists for Dominican, hitting six three-pointers as the Stars made 11 of 25 from long range. Kamryn Woods added 16 points and eight rebounds.
Lakeland now gets ready to go on the road Saturday to face Concordia University Wisconsin, with game time in Mequon set for 2 p.m.
