Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Muskies dominate fifth set to get NACC win over Wisconsin Lutheran

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Colin Kenney (Sr.-Shorewood, Wis.), Jakob Donohue (So.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Levi Everts (Jr.-Hartford, Wis.) all came up big in the deciding set and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team pulled through for a five-set victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies outlasted the Warriors 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-7, staying perfect in the all-time series with WLC with their eighth win in the teams' eight all-time matches. Lakeland also won for the second time in six five-set matches this season and improved to 4-9 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Muskies struggled at times throughout the first four sets but were the clearly stronger and cleaner team in the final set. The Warriors (2-12 overall, 0-4 NACC) committed three service aces, a setting error and an attack error early in the set, and Lakeland used the momentum built from that 7-4 lead to pull away late in the set, scoring seven of the match's final eight points.

Kenney delivered a pair of service aces in a 4-0 run after WLC had closed within 8-6. Donohue also posted two kills, an ace and combined with Everts on a block in the fifth, and Everts a kill plus an ace to give the Muskies a 14- lead and match point, which they would convert on when a Warriors attack went long to end the match that took 1 hour and 56 minutes.

Lakeland hit .143 for the match with 53 kills and 33 errors, and also finished at a disadvantage in service aces and blocks. Wisconsin Lutheran hit .045 with 35 kills and 29 errors, but finished with an 11-8 lead in aces and a 12-8 margin in blocks.

The teams combined for 25 ties and 11 lead changes, though many of those came in a back-and-forth first set that included 11 ties and five lead changes.

Ben Busalacchi (Sr.-Muskego, Wis.) finished with 24 kills, his seventh match with at least 20 kills this season. Eli Weinrich (So.-Mequon, Wis.) also finished with 10 kills, Chase Anderson (So.-Hartford, Wis.) posted 43 assists and Everts added a career-high 17 digs. Donohue also finished with six kills plus a team-high five blocks (two solo, three assisted).

James Biedenbender led Wisconsin Lutheran with eight kills and added three service aces. Chris Mann also came off the bench to post seven kills and Drew Wempner finished with six kills, four service aces and eight blocks (two solo, six assisted).

Lakeland goes on the road for its next match when it faces St. Norbert College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in De Pere.
