LISLE, Ill. – The Lakeland University men's volleyball team put up a fight in the third set but Benedictine University remained undefeated in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a three-set sweep Friday night.
The Muskies fell on the road by a score of 25-15, 25-17, 25-23 as the Eagles improved to 5-0 in conference (10-6 overall). Lakeland saw its brief two-game winning string snapped and dropped to 5-10 overall and 2-3 in the NACC.
Benedictine was in charge of the first two sets, never trailing and steadily building a lead in both, but the Muskies had a golden opportunity to extend the match in the third. Lakeland went on a brief 4-1 run to take a 21-17 lead, including
Colin Kenney (
Sr.-Shorewood, Wis.) posting a kill and an ace, the latter giving the Muskies their biggest lead in the match.
Lakeland still led 22-18 after the teams traded service errors, but the Eagles' Chase Olson would take over the rest of the way as Benedictine closed scoring seven of the final eight points. Olson posted three kills and a block and then added a service ace on match point to close it out as he finished with eight kills in 12 attacks plus four blocks and three service aces.
Ben Busalacchi (
Sr.-Muskego, Wis.) posted a match-high nine kills and added two service aces to lead the Muskies.
Eli Weinrich (
So.-Mequon, Wis.) also posted seven kills and
Chase Anderson (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) finished with 25 assists.
Cooper Armstrong also added eight kills for Benedictine, which hit .333 for the match with 34 kills and just eight errors in 78 attack attempts. The Eagles also added a 9-2 advantage in blocks.
Lakeland is back home for its next match Wednesday when it hosts Marian University at 6 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
