Game Recap: Baseball |

Lakeland falls twice to Edgewood in NACC baseball home date

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Zak Keegan (Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) had a four-hit day but the Lakeland University baseball team dropped two more games in conference, falling to Edgewood College twice Wednesday afternoon at home.

The Eagles won games by scores of 6-2 and 13-1, with the second game scheduled for nine innings ending in seven on account of the 10-run rule. Edgewood continued to hang with the leaders in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, improving to 11-7 in conference (17-15 overall) while Lakeland dropped to 6-25 overall and 1-17 in league play.

Keegan went 2-for-3 in both games and also drove in a run early in both contests as the Muskies stayed close in the early going in both games.

Keegan's single up the middle was part of a two-run third inning in the first game as Lakeland cut an early Edgewood lead down to 3-2. Chris Day (So.-Victorville, Calif.) also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly earlier in the inning, after Armaan Sharma (So.-Pinole, Calif.) walked and OakLee Spens (Sr.-South Weber, Utah) doubled to set the table before both scored.

The Eagles scored their runs in first game in bunches of three, including three in the first, all coming unearned after an error with two outs in the frame. Edgewood also added three more in the fifth, including a number of soft hits among four singles in the inning to take a 6-2 lead.

Nathan Stephany (Fr.-Kiel, Wis.) pitched a complete game in the opener and largely pitched well, allowing 12 hits and six runs (three earned) with three strikeouts and two walks. The Muskies were unable to make much headway against Edgewood pitching all day, though, including Gavin Vrana throwing a complete game and allowing just five hits with seven strikeouts in the opener.

Lakeland also received a respectable start from Eli Watkins (Fr.-Herrin, Ill.) for most of his six innings in the second game, with two notable exceptions. Edgewood's Kyle Sagan and Xavier Schreiber both hit two-run homers off Watkins, Sagan's coming in the first inning and Schreiber's coming on a 3-2 pitch going the opposite way to left center to make it 5-1.

Watkins finished allowing seven hits and five runs with three strikeouts in six innings before the bottom fell out in the top of the seventh. The Eagles scored eight times against three Lakeland relievers to blow the game open, with five hits plus three walks and two errors in the inning.

Keegan and Day both went 2-for-3 in the second game, and Keegan drove in the Muskies' run in the bottom of the third with a single to score Spens. Dane Nickolai (Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) also went 2-for-3, including his first collegiate double in the seventh inning.

Lakeland is back on the field tomorrow at home for a non-conference doubleheader against Carroll University starting at noon.
