Sr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) pounded home 18 kills to cap a productive weekend attacking, freshman
Rylee Esquibel (
Devine, Texas) posted a double-double and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team nabbed its first win of the season, defeating the University of Dallas in four sets Saturday.
The Muskies closed their Texas trip with a split of two matches at the tourney hosted by the University of Dallas. Lakeland fell to McMurray (Texas) University 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 in its first match of the day before rallying to top the host school 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19, to finish 1-3 on the weekend.
Stevens wrapped up the weekend with 56 kills over four matches and at least 11 kills in every match. She ramped it up on Saturday against Dallas hitting .342 with 18 kills and five errors in 38 swings, and finished one short of her career high of 19 kills set last year against Rockford University.
Esquibel gave the Muskies a strong second option in the final match against the Crusaders (0-4 overall), finishing with a weekend-best 12 kills. She also added 16 digs for her first collegiate double-double.
Lakeland hit .113 as a team against Dallas with 48 kills and 30 errors, but the Crusaders finished even lower at .071 (40 kills, 30 errors). The Muskies also helped their cause with 13 service aces, including
Lucero Velazquez (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) leading with four aces.
Faith Baker (
Fr.-Verona, Ill.) chipped in seven kills, and
Ryan Figi (
So.-Hartland, Wis.) also set a career high with 18 digs and finished the trip with 57 digs at the libero spot, including double figures in all four matches.
Kaitlyn Ramirez (
Jr.-El Paso, Texas) finished with 19 assists and nine digs and
Roseily Carrasquillo (
Sr.-Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) added another double-double with 17 assists plus 11 digs.
The Muskies had a tougher time in their first match Saturday, playing from behind much of the way against McMurry (2-2 overall). Lakeland never led in the first or third sets, and a second set that was close up to a tie at 15-15 swung when the War Hawks went on runs of 3-0 and later 5-0 late.
Stevens posted 11 kills and
Caitlyn Pernsteiner (
So.-Arpin, Wis.) added eight kills, but no other Lakeland player registered more than three kills. Figi notched 16 digs, Carrasquillo totaled 12 assists and Esquibel finished with three service aces.
Lakeland next will face a pair of nationally ranked teams when it takes on UW-Stevens Point and UW-Oshkosh this Wednesday in Stevens Point. The Muskies take on the host Pointers at 5:30 p.m. and then face Oshkosh at 7:30 p.m.
