Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Augustana’s single tallies in both halves good enough to defeat Lakeland women’s soccer

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Ingrid Steinbock (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) kept the Lakeland University women's soccer team in the game with nine saves but Augustana (Ill.) College scored single goals in both halves in a 2-0 win in the Muskies' final pre-conference tune-up at Taylor Field Saturday.

The Vikings scored in the middle stages of both halves and defeated the Muskies for the second straight year, following up a 1-0 win in the teams' matchup last year. The game also featured the second meeting of a former Muskies player and head coach, as Augustana head coach Scott Mejia led the Lakeland men's and women's soccer programs in 1999 and 2000, and with the women's team coached current Muskies head coach Heather Robare.

Augustana (3-0-1 overall) came out firing and Steinbock made several good saves in the game's early going, including a diving stop of a bending shot by Liesl Whitener in the fourth minute and coming out to catch a breakaway poke attempt by Abby DeGustino in the 14th minute.

The Muskies' quality offensive chances were limited, but Addison Weed (Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) had their two best opportunities of the game in the first half. The first came on a free kick from 25 yards out in the 12th minute that cleared just to the left of the Augustana wall and Vikings goalkeeper Sara Schinker had to make a diving save of. The second came less than a minute later when an Augustana defender poked the ball away from a contest by Jenna Caterino (Sr.-Stanton, Mich.), but it went right to Weed, whose shot from 28 yards out was bending inside the left post and Schinker had to dive to knock away.

The Vikings scored the match's first goal in the 26th minute, just after a throw-in in their offensive end. Carson Kekelik won a battle with a Lakeland defender for the throw-in, then turned around and hit a shot with her left foot from 12 yards out that snuck just inside the right post past Steinbock for a goal.

Lakeland had a brief opportunity early in the second half, as Mikayla Belasco (So.-Muskegon, Mich.), Weed and Allison Solberg-Kieler (Jr.-Ridgeway, Wis.) worked an attack forward and Malaya Sperber (Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) got off a shot from 25 yards out that second half goalkeeper Mary Pietras saved. The Muskies would have few other chances, while Augustana had several more golden chances, including one stopped by Steinbock less than three minutes into the second half and another that she got a hand on top of on the ground just before it rolled over the goal line.

The Vikings finally added on an insurance goal in the 61st minute when Paige Bingen won a fight for a cross and then centered a pass to Whitener, who scored from 16 yards away to make it 2-0.

Augustana finished with a 15-6 advantage in shot attempts, including an 11-5 lead in shots on goal plus a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. Schinker and Pietras combined to make five saves for the guests.

Lakeland now gets ready to open Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday when it travels to face St. Norbert College at 7 p.m. in De Pere.
