WAUWATOSA, Wis. – The Lakeland University women's tennis team lost a trio of close matches and Wisconsin Lutheran College completed a sweep for a 7-0 dual victory Wednesday night at Hart Park.
Two third-set tiebreakers in singles play and a doubles match decided by two points all went the Warriors' way in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference dual. Lakeland dropped to 0-5 overall (0-4 NACC) while Wisconsin Lutheran moved to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in conference duals.
The Muskies' nearest miss came at No. 4 singles, where
Mary Johnson (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and WLC's Amelia Kelley played a marathon match. Johnson won the first set but Kelley came back to take the second set, and then won the third set tiebreak that went past 10 points before she finally clinched a 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 win.
Olivia Heling (
Jr.-West Bend, Wis.) also went to a third set in her No. 1 singles match against Ali Schmidt. Heling also won the first set but Schmidt came back for a 4-6, 6-0, 10-6 win.
Heling and
Alexis Labonte (
Fr.-Portage, Ind.) also were near a win at No. 1 singles, but Schmidt and Maddy Olson gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 6-4 win. Labonte also pushed Olson in the second set before falling 6-1, 6-4 in their No. 2 singles match.
Lakeland is on the road again when it travels to face Edgewood College Sunday at 10 a.m. in Madison.
