Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Gigstead’s early goal stands up as Muskies edge Cougars for first NACC win

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Porter Gigstead (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) scored early in the match and the Lakeland University men's soccer team held on the rest of the way to defeat Concordia University Chicago 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Taylor Field.

Gigstead scored his second goal of the season and his first game-winner just 13 minutes, 7 seconds into the match. The Muskies then weathered a warm day, mass substitutions by their opponent in the second half and two CUC shots off the crossbar to snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

Lakeland's tally started with a free kick awarded after an offsides call on the Cougars. Jordan Davis-Troller (Jr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) sent a long kick into the offensive end that pinballed around in the air no fewer than seven times before Brahm Dell Adema (Jr.-Plano, Texas) finally controlled the ball on the ground.

Dell Adema briefly accelerated past a defender on the left and threaded a pass through to Gigstead, who collected, made a quick move to his right and then struck a shot on the ground from 20 yards out. The ball skidded twice, just out of the reach of CUC goalkeeper Kyle Schultz, and slipped inside the right post to put Lakeland ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute.

The teams traded opportunities the remainder of the first half, though the Cougars twice had golden chances to tie. Garret Poynter hit a laser from 30 yards out in the 25th minute that hit the crossbar, and then bounced high up in the air close to the goal before a CUC foul ended the threat. Concordia had another chance in the 37th minute when Spencer Nicholson hit another shot that bounced off the crossbar but was eventually cleared.

The Muskies maintained their lead into halftime, and the Cougars came out with almost an entirely different 11 on the field for the second half. Concordia held a slight advantage in play in the second half, and Lakeland was held without a shot in the final 33 minutes, after an attempt by Aldo Rangel (Fr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) was blocked in the 57th minute.

The Cougars also had few quality chances, though, and despite a 14-9 lead in shot attempts in the game did not put a shot on goal after halftime, including three shots blocked in the second half. The defense including Justin Cain (Fr.-Houston, Texas), Omero Cornejo (Jr.-Carpentersville, Ill.), Davis-Troller, Brendan Perry (Sr.-New Baltimore, Mich.) and Logan Schuessler (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) plus the Muskies midfield kept CUC at bay, and Nicholson's shot wide with just over five minutes left was the last threat to through the defense at all.

Zach Heiman (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) made three saves for his first shutout of the season. Schultz and Nethan Guidel combined to make five saves for Concordia Chicago, which dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference.

The Muskies are on the road for their next game Wednesday night at Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee.
