Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Muskies sweep Cobbers, finish with split at Stevens Point tourney

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Susana Stevens (Sr.-Las Cruces, N.M.) had another big match on her way to all-tournament honors and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team split two matches Saturday at the Pointer Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

The Muskies opened their lone day at the tourney by sweeping Concordia College Moorhead (Minn.) 25-17, 25-17, 25-18. Lakeland then saw its brief two-match winning streak snapped with a 25-16, 27-25, 25-12 loss to UW-River Falls to close the day.

The Muskies (3-11 overall) dominated their first match against the Concordia Cobbers (0-13 overall), hitting a robust .387 with 49 kills and just eight errors in 106 attacks. Lakeland hit at its highest rate since posting a .397 mark against Alverno College Sept. 18, 2018, and its 49 kills were easily its most in a three-set match this season.

Stevens followed up her career-high 21 kills in the Muskies' win over Benedictine University on Tuesday with another 19 kills against Concordia. The senior outside hitter hit at a .567 rate with just two errors in 30 attacks and notched double figures in kills for the eighth time this year.

Rylee Esquibel (Fr.-Devine, Texas) also finished with nine kills and Caitlyn Pernsteiner (So.-Arpin, Wis.) added seven kills. Esquibel also finished with three service aces. Sydney Gay (Fr.-Rice Lake, Wis.) also posted 34 assists in setting duties and Ryan Figi (So.-Hartland, Wis.) finished with 16 digs.

Lakeland faced a different challenge in the second match against UW-River Falls and had nowhere near the same success hitting. The Muskies hit .030 with 25 kills and 22 errors, though they also let an opportunity to tie the match slip away in the second set when the Falcons (7-8 overall) fought off three set points and came back from 24-21 down to steal the set.

Stevens posted eight kills and Pernsteiner added six kills plus a team-high 14 digs against UWRF. Gay totaled 16 assists and Figi added 12 digs.

Ava Goldsberry finished with a match-high 11 kills for the Falcons, who hit .250 with 44 kills and 15 errors. Audrey Petersen also added 17 digs.

Lakeland is back in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
