LISLE, Ill. – Twin sisters
Alondra Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Marlen Reyes (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) teamed up on a successful corner kick late in the match and the Lakeland University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with Benedictine University Saturday evening in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
Alondra Reyes served a corner kick that
Marlen Reyes headed into the left corner of the net with less than five minutes remaining and the Muskies finished with a tie for the second time in their last three matches. Lakeland is now 1-5-2 overall and 0-2-2 in conference play.
Turnabout proved to be fair play in a match where both teams took turns with the upper hand, only for the other team to register the lone goal in the half the other controlled.
The Muskies finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots in the first half, spent much of the first 45 minutes on the attack and had several golden opportunities, including in the 15th minute.
Malaya Sperber (
Fr.-Grafton, Wis.) received a pass ahead that led to a direct one-on-one opportunity against Benedictine goalkeeper Katherine Prochnow, but Prochnow stopped Sperber's first shot, and a stab at a rebound attempt was blocked by a defender.
Instead, it was the Eagles (0-8-2 overall, 0-3-1 NACC) who scored the first goal less than a minute later, as Lyric Jones sent a through ball ahead to Kailyn Knudson, who maneuvered around a defender and hit an arcing shot into the upper left corner to make it 1-0.
Benedictine then finished with a 12-7 lead in shots in the second half, including 10 shots on goal, but the Muskies produced the half's goal.
Alondra Reyes had a pair of chances at a service from the right side, the first on a free kick and the second on a corner kick. Alondra's corner kick sailed into the middle of the box, and sister Marlen's header deflected perfectly into the goal for her second tally of the season and 13th of her career.
Ingrid Steinbock (
Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) posted a season-high 12 saves while Prochnow stopped six shots for the Eagles.
Marlen Reyes led Lakeland with six shot attempts, four on goal, and
Addison Weed (
Fr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) added three shots.
Lakeland travels again for its next game when it faces Dominican University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
