PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Lakeland University football team had a long night in its season opener falling to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville 65-0 on the road at Platteville's Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium Saturday night.
The Muskies struggled in all aspects in falling to the Pioneers of the powerful Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in the first game of the season for the second year in a row. UW-Platteville (1-0) scored touchdowns on its first five offensive possessions and added scores on defense and special teams in that span.
Lakeland had some success throwing the ball as quarterback
Robby Michael (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) passed for 161 yards, most of it in the first half. The Muskies were held to a net of minus-27 yards rushing, though, a total damaged heavily by eight sacks for a loss of 80 yards by the Pioneers.
Platteville needed just 11 offensive plays to score its first five touchdowns, getting help from a blocked punt and a turnover on downs and also throwing deep regularly early in the game. Quarterback Michael Priami completed touchdown passes of 37, 34, 39 and 59 yards in the first half.
Michael completed 15 of 33 passes for 161 yards and was intercepted twice.
Kolby Cohen (
Sr.-Missouri City, Texas) caught five passes for 73 yards and
Keon Willis (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) added three catches for 54 yards.
Freshman
Deamonte Arroyo (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) led the defense with five tackles and
Karlis Ozols (
Sr.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) added four tackles.
Michael Dye (
Fr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) had one of the highlights of the game for Lakeland with his first collegiate interception in the fourth quarter to stop a Pioneers drive.
The Muskies are idle next week before beginning the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference loop against Concordia University Chicago Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
