PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Halle Boldt (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) scored a season-high 20 points and the Lakeland University women's basketball team used defense to start fast and cruised to a 77-51 win over Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies led from start to finish, breaking out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter and never letting the Cougars get close the rest of the way. Lakeland won in impressive fashion again at home, improving to 6-7 overall, 3-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and 6-1 at the Woltzen Gym.
The Muskies held Concordia (1-11 overall, 0-5 NACC) to 23.6% shooting for the game, with the Cougars making just 13 of 55 shots from the field. Lakeland also registered a big advantage in turnovers, with CUC committing 29 turnovers to the Muskies' 15, their third-lowest number of the season.
The Muskies scored 30 points in the first quarter to take a 30-15 lead after 10 minutes. Lakeland forced 12 turnovers in the opening period, including 10 steals, and Boldt made all five of her shots in scoring 11 points in the quarter while
Alexis Johnson (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) posted six steals in the game's first 6 minutes, 18 seconds.
The Muskies would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the game. Concordia Chicago briefly closed within 32-20 midway through the second quarter after a jumper by Mikalah Ellis, but Lakeland scored the final eight points of the half, with Boldt's layup with 13 seconds left in the half giving the Muskies a 40-20 halftime lead. The Cougars would never get closer than 17 points in the final 20 minutes.
Boldt made 9 of 13 shots from the field and added six rebounds plus four steals and three blocked shots.
Jenna Caterino (
Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) also scored a season-high 13 points and added five rebounds and Johnson finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and eight steals.
Lakeland received contributions throughout its roster, with 11 different players scoring.
Meryam Belbaz (
Sr.-Skokie, Ill.) scored eight points including a pair of three-pointers,
Ariana Vaitkeviciute (
Fr.-Merrionette Park, Ill.) totaled seven points and five rebounds and
Amari Banks (
Jr.-Aurora, Ill.) added five points.
Lydia Levra (
Fr.-Elk Mound, Ill.) also scored four points in a season-best 18 minutes.
Lauryn Johnson (
Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) scored one point but led the team with eight rebounds.
The Muskies finished shooting 45.9%, making 34 of 74 shots from the field including 5 of 14 from three-point range and 4 of 8 free throw attempts.
Khaliah Reid scored 19 points to lead Concordia Chicago. Ellis added 14 points off the bench and Alisyn MacGregor scored five points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
Lakeland is home again Wednesday when it faces Marian University at 7:15 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
