MILWAUKEE –
Halle Boldt (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and
Jenna Caterino (
Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) both posted career highs with big double-doubles and the Lakeland University women's basketball team dominated the rebounding battle in a 73-51 win over Alverno College Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game.
The Muskies never trailed in the game and were in charge throughout in completing a season sweep of the Inferno. Lakeland improved to 8-8 overall and is now 5-2 in the conference with nine games left in the regular season.
Boldt finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, both collegiate career highs as part of her second career double-double. Caterino also finished with 11 points and a career-best 14 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds as part of her second career double-double.
The duo led Lakeland to a huge 60-31 rebounding advantage, its biggest rebound margin of the season and far ahead of the Muskies' plus-6 margin in their 100-52 win over Alverno on Dec. 7. Twenty-one of the rebounds came on the offensive end and helped Lakeland to a 25-1 advantage in second chance points.
The Muskies jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes and needed less than a quarter to push the lead to double digits for good. Boldt and Caterino scored five points each in the first quarter and both
Alexis Johnson (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and
Jenna Shea (
So.-Appleton, Wis.) added four points apiece as Lakeland took an 18-7 lead after one quarter.
Lakeland continued to build the margin in the second quarter and took its biggest lead of the half when
Meryam Belbaz (
Sr.-Skokie, Ill.) scored on a layup to make it 40-17 just before halftime. The Muskies led 40-20 at the break and would be ahead by no less than 20 the rest of the game, pushing the advantage out as far as 29 points in the fourth.
Johnson scored 11 points and added six rebounds and Shea scored 10 points off the bench to give Lakeland four scoring in double figures.
A.T. Bartlett (
Jr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) added a season-high eight rebounds plus five assists and four steals and Belbaz and
Ariana Vaitkeviciute (
Fr.-Merrionette Park, Ill.) added six points each.
Lakeland hit 37.1% of its shots (26 of 70) plus 18 of 23 from the free throw line (78.3%), including Boldt going 11-for-12 at the stripe. The Muskies also held Alverno (2-14 overall, 0-7 NACC) to 25.0% shooting (14 of 56). Shiauna Nixon-Boyd led the hosts with 19 points.
Lakeland next will face Rockford University Saturday at home at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium at 3:15 p.m. The Muskies will be participating in the Black Out Cancer initiative, raising money for the Breast Friend Cancer Foundation.
