The Lakeland University women's soccer team plays for the final time this season when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday at 1 p.m. at John Taylor Memorial Field.
.
The series between the Muskies and Falcons dates back to 1994, Lakeland's second year of playing women's soccer. Concordia has dominated the series much of this century, winning 19 straight including a 3-1 victory last season just under a year ago on Oct. 30, 2024 at Taylor Field.
Janae Kilsdonk scored for the Muskies in the 72nd minute and
Ingrid Steinbock made six saves in goal. The result was Lakeland's closest against the Falcons in 16 years, since a 4-2 loss in Mequon Oct. 21, 2008. Lakeland last defeated Concordia 1-0 in the Lake Michigan Conference Tournament semifinals Nov. 2, 2005. Amy Christenson scored the lone goal and Alli Weiss made nine saves as Lakeland continued its march toward the LMC tourney title and its second and most recent trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Lakeland last time out: Tied St. Norbert 2-2 Wednesday
The Muskies continued to play better late in the season and very nearly earned their first win over the Green Knights since 2005, leading until St. Norbert scored a tying goal with 4:25 left in the match.
Malaya Sperber scored a pair of goals to twice put Lakeland ahead, the second time in the 61st minute. The Muskies controlled play for a good share of the final 30 minutes and appeared on their way to a win until SNC scored on a header off a free kick from near the right corner late. Lakeland did snap a 12-game losing streak in the series against the Green Knights and earned just the second win or tie against St. Norbert in 19 all-time meetings. Sperber scored her fifth and sixth goals in the last five matches and is now tied for third in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference in goals this season.
Addi Reimer made 13 saves in goal.
Concordia last time out: Lost to Illinois Tech 5-0 Wednesday
The Falcons were unable to slow down the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference-leading Scarlet Hawks, who scored three goals in the first 30 minutes. Illinois Tech outshot Concordia 30-5 for the game, including 19-0 in the first half. Kara Claussner made 12 saves for the Falcons, while Koffy'e Chappel paced CUW with a pair of shots, both on goal.
About the Falcons: Concordia Wisconsin enters with a 6-4 mark in the NACC and has already clinched its spot in the eight-team NACC Tournament. The Falcons have been up and down all season, as evidenced by their 7-7-3 overall record. Concordia opened the season with three straight ties, has winning and losing streaks of four games each, and had recently won three of four before falling to Illinois Tech. CUW has typically been a perennial contender in the NACC and won the conference tournament as recently as 2022 and tied for the regular season title in 2021.
Potpourri: Saturday's match marks the final one for three Lakeland seniors:
Janae Kilsdonk,
Brianna Love and
Allison Solberg-Kieler... Love is one of seven Muskies who have played in every match this season entering the finale. Others include:
Lia Armstrong,
Mikayla Belasco,
Ava Neils,
Addi Reimer,
Ines Rodriguez and
Ingrid Steinbock. Only two have started all 16 games: Armstrong and Neils... Armstrong enters having started 48 of the team's 49 matches since the beginning of her freshman season. Her only 'missed' start came last season against Edgewood...
Malaya Sperber's eight goals and 17 points are the most by a Muskie since
Alondra Reyes scored 10 goals in the 2023 season.
