PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) buried a penalty kick late in the first half for the lead and the Lakeland University men's soccer team held it the rest of the way for a 2-1 victory over Ripon College in its season finale Wednesday night at John Taylor Memorial Field.
The Muskies finished the season with their second straight win and seventh win overall to clinch the program's winningest season in years. Lakeland's seven victories are the most since the 2013 team won eight matches.
The Muskies (7-10-2 overall) also defeated the Red Hawks for the first time in five meetings, snapping Ripon's 3-0-1 run in the series. Lakeland finished the season with a strong 5-2 record in non-conference games, including two wins over two days to finish out after also defeating Maranatha Baptist University 1-0 Tuesday.
Davis-Troller scored his 10th goal of the season, most by a Muskie since Michecadet Gethand also scored 10 goals in 2021. He also finished the campaign with 26 points, the most by a Lakeland men's soccer player since Ted Cormier and Kevin Fitchett both scored 31 points back in 2008.
Davis-Troller took the penalty kick after creating an opportunity for
Dunia Wangu (
So.-Tanzania) in the 42nd minute with a diagonal through ball pass to Wangu on the right wing, leading him into a one-on-one with Ripon goalkeeper Christian Hernandez. Wangu got to the doorstep and then made a move on Hernandez but was tripped up with an open net, resulting in a yellow card on Hernandez and the PK.
Wangu also scored Lakeland's first goal, just 95 seconds into the game with an assist from the goalkeeper.
Matt English (
Sr.-Cheyenne, Wyo.) received a ball played back to him and then drove a kick right down the center of the field, bouncing all the way to the edge of the 18-yard box where Wangu got to it just before Hernandez and directed it into the goal for his sixth of the season and third straight match scoring.
Ripon (9-6-2 overall) tied the game in the 17th minute, quickly making the Muskies pay for a misplay. The Red Hawks' Eric Staszak stole a pass in the middle of the field, sent a pass to Ian Martinez on the right wing and Martinez after one touch crossed to a wide open Andre Robertson on the left post to even the game at 1-1.
Lakeland took the lead into halftime and then held up while on defense for a good share of the second half. Ripon outshot the Muskies 7-1 in the final 45 minutes, with English making three saves. The Red Hawks had few strong threats in the half, the best coming on a corner kick with just over 20 minutes left. English initially got his hands on the ball but it got away and Will Blackwell took a shot that was kept out of the goal by a sliding Davis-Troller. Hashim Khan also had a rebound attempt that English knocked away.
The Muskies had a final chance to salt the game away in the 89th minute when
Roman Riggs (
Fr.-North Liberty, Iowa) battled through two defenders in the midfield to get a pass to Davis-Troller on the right wing. Davis-Troller then sent a cross to a sliding Wangu in front of the goal but Ripon second half goalkeeper Bennett Ash made the save.
English finished the game making five saves in his final collegiate match. Ripon posted a 12-9 advantage in shots in the game, but Lakeland did good work in the midfield and back end with
Austin Eigenberger-Vahsholtz (
So.-Grafton, Wis.),
Madden Skurka (
So.-De Pere, Wis.) and
Cody Vojta (
Fr.-St. Germain, Wis.) among those keeping the Red Hawks in check.
The match was the final one for five seniors: Davis-Troller, English,
Eduardo Campuzano (
Hinckley, Ill.),
Omero Cornejo (
Carpentersville, Ill.) and
Brahm Dell Adema (
Plano, Texas).
