Lakeland University football cornerback
Zelmarious Banks (
Fr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) doubled up on honors after his record-breaking performance Saturday, receiving conference and national awards both announced Tuesday.
Banks was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's defensive player of the week, as announced by the conference Tuesday morning. He also was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, as part of the national website's weekly all-star list honoring the top players nationally across NCAA Division III at each position from the previous week.
Banks received NACC weekly honors for the first time in his career after an incredible performance Saturday in the Muskies' 47-16 win over Concordia University Chicago. He intercepted three passes and returned two for touchdowns, the first a 65-yard return in the first quarter and the second a full 100 yards from the back of the end zone and the length of the field in the third quarter. Banks is the second player in NACC history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in a game, joining Kendal Karcz of St. Norbert College who performed the feat Oct. 9, 2021 against Wisconsin Lutheran College.
Banks added a third interception in the fourth quarter, returning it 30 yards but having it shortened to 10 yards after an illegal block on the return. He still finished with 175 yards in interception return yards in the game, setting a new NCAA Division III record and breaking the 42-year old record of 164 yards set by Rick Connor of McDaniel (then known as Western Maryland) College Oct. 15, 1983.
Banks also added two pass breakups in a dominant performance, and with five interceptions in Lakeland's past five games he has now shot up among the Division III leaders in interceptions. He leads the NACC and is tied for seventh in D-III in total interceptions, and he also is tied for eighth in Division III in interceptions per game (0.63).
Banks is the second Muskies player to receive NACC honors this season, joining quarterback
Robby Michael (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.), who was named the conference's offensive player of the week after the season opener against Carthage College Sept. 6. Banks also is Lakeland's first D3football.com Team of the Week award recipient this season, and the first since
Charles Kobe received the honor at the linebacker spot after last year's season finale against Rockford University.
Lakeland (2-6 overall, 2-4 NACC) is on the road this week to face Eureka College Saturday at 1 p.m. in Eureka, Ill.
