Beloit pulls away late against Lakeland in non-conference game

BELOIT, Wis. – Beloit College used a big run to break open a close game in the second half and the Lakeland University men's basketball team was defeated 86-67 Tuesday night in non-conference play.

The Buccaneers outscored the Muskies 23-6 over a stretch of more than six minutes late to put away what was a close contest most of the way. Lakeland dropped to 2-7 overall while Beloit improved to 4-5 on the season.

The Muskies led for most of the first half and outshot Beloit for the game, making 46.3% of their shots (25 of 54). The Buccaneers grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, though, taking 22 more shots than Lakeland, and also took advantage of the Muskies committing 19 turnovers.

Lakeland led by as many as six in the first half at 20-14 midway through the half after a layup by R.J. Hines Jr. (Jr.-Gainesville, Fla.), and was in front for nearly 14 minutes of the opening half. Beloit finished the half on a 10-0 run over the final 2:20, though, taking a 37-30 lead into halftime.

The Muskies closed back within four at 44-40 early in the second half after a three-pointer by Peyton Mrotek (Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.), and still were within 59-50 after a driving layup by Asanjai Hunter (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) with 10:54 left in the game. The Buccaneers scored the next eight points, though, and led by as many as 26 points late.

Hunter scored 19 points to lead the Muskies, and the senior is now 24 points from 1,000 points for his Lakeland career. Max Justic (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) also scored 12 points and Mrotek and Adison Mittelstadt (Fr.-Mayville, Wis.) added seven points each. Parker Braun (Jr.-Brillion, Wis.) also added a game-high 10 rebounds and Justic finished with four steals.

Semaj Roy led Beloit with 19 points and seven rebounds and Dae'Quan Davis added 18 points and eight rebounds. The Buccaneers shot 44.7% (34 of 76) and outrebounded Lakeland 45-34.

The Muskies are on the road again Friday when they travel to take on Buena Vista (Iowa) University at 6 p.m. in Storm Lake, Iowa.
