PLYMOUTH, Wis. – St. Norbert College shot better than 55% in both halves and broke the game open with a huge first-half run as the Lakeland University men's basketball team fell 99-60 Wednesday night in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Green Knights were sharp on both ends of the court and defeated the Muskies for the second time this season. Lakeland struggled after a good start to the game and dropped to 7-15 overall and 6-9 in the NACC with three regular season games remaining.
Lakeland played St. Norbert tough in the teams' first meeting of the season, a 79-67 Green Knights win on their homecourt in De Pere on Nov. 26. This time, St. Norbert (17-6 overall, 13-3 NACC) shot 55.4%, making 41 of 74 shots from the field including 10 of 23 (43.5%) from three-point range, and committing just six turnovers in an efficient offensive performance.
The Muskies struggled to score consistently, finishing shooting 34.4% (21 of 61). The game didn't start out that way, though, as Lakeland made four of its first five shots to take an early 9-4 lead just over 2 1/2 minutes into the contest.
The Green Knights would dominate, from there, outscoring the Muskies 42-9 over the next 12 1/2 minutes. SNC went on separate runs of 18-4 and 17-0 in that span, and when big man Brandt Wilson hit a three-pointer it gave the guests a 46-18 lead with 4:05 left in the first half.
St. Norbert led 53-29 at halftime and was ahead by as much as 41 in the second half. Some of the few highlights in the final 20 minutes came when
Tommy Fritsch (
So.-Greendale, Wis.) came off the bench late to score the first five points of his collegiate career, including a three-pointer, and
Keenan Klitzke (
So.-Appleton, Wis.) added a three-point play in the final minute.
Isaiah Hammond (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Peyton Mrotek (
Jr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) led Lakeland with 10 points each, with Hammond also pacing the team with six rebounds.
Tim Ward (
Jr.-Plainfield, Ill.) added eight points and
Gage Cornell (
Jr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) and
Cliff McCray (
Sr.-Madison, Wis.) tallied seven points apiece.
Wilson led St. Norbert with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Garrett Grzesk also contributed 15 points and eight rebounds and Aidan Harrington scored 12. Fifteen players scored in all for the Green Knights, who also outrebounded the Muskies 48-30 and turned 16 offensive rebounds into a 26-9 edge in second chance points.
Lakeland is on the road Saturday, traveling to face Illinois Tech at 1 p.m. in Chicago.
