Series history: 42nd meeting, Lakeland leads 26-15
The Muskies have largely had good success against the Stars of late, winning 17 of the teams' last 20 meetings. The last two meetings have gone to overtime, including earlier this season when Lakeland pulled out a 96-93 win in River Forest, Ill., as
Isaiah Hammond (29 points),
Cliff McCray (27) and
Gage Cornell (17) all set career highs. The last meeting at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium came just over a year ago, when Dominican prevailed 104-100, scoring the final five points in overtime to win after
Cam Jaeger hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to send the game to an extra session. The series dates back to Nov. 23, 1983, when Dominican defeated Lakeland 91-87 in overtime at home.
Lakeland last time out: Lost at Concordia Wisconsin 100-90 Wednesday
The Muskies lost a shootout with the Falcons that included a pair of standout individual performances. Lakeland's
Asanjai Hunter scored a career-high 29 points, but Concordia's Casey Verhagen was even better with a career-best 44 points. The Muskies led almost all of the game's first 33 minutes but CUW took the lead for good with less than seven minutes left and went on to the win.
Tim Ward also scored 19 points and added eight rebounds but Lakeland lost its fourth straight game and slipped to 10th in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference standings, though the Muskies are still just one game out of seventh.
Dominican last time out: Lost at #8 Wisconsin Lutheran 93-90 Wednesday
The Stars nearly pulled off a big upset on the road Wednesday, pushing the nationally ranked Warriors the whole way in a narrow loss. Dominican was within a point with less than two minutes left but WLC answered with a three-pointer and the teams traded scores the rest of the way. The Stars got back within a point after a three-pointer by Terrell Taylor with two seconds left, but the Warriors hit two free throws with a second left for the final score. Taylor led the Stars with 27 points and Adrian Pelszynski and Robbie Taylor added 16 and 14 points off the bench, respectively.
Though Dominican enters with a 4-9 NACC mark, it has been one of the hottest teams in the conference of late. The Stars won four straight before consecutive losses to the top two teams in the conference, first to St. Norbert by a point before falling to Wisconsin Lutheran by three. Dominican has been shutting teams down from three-point range over the last six games, with opponents hitting just 24 of 117 from long range in that stretch (20.5%).
Senior Day: Lakeland still has two more home games after but Saturday has been marked as Senior Day for the Muskies and their two seniors.
Isaiah Hammond and
Cliff McCray will both be honored before the game, Hammond after four years with the Muskies while McCray is in his first year with the program. Hammond enters with 883 career points and with 577 career rebounds is 18th in school history in that category. McCray has stepped in this year in his first year with the program and is one of five Muskies averaging in double figures with 13.8 points plus 4.9 rebounds per game. He also was named the NACC Player of the Week on Jan. 22.
