Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lakeland holds off stubborn Dominican to cap successful Senior Day

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – A.T. Bartlett (Jr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Jenna Shea (So.-Appleton, Wis.) made key three-pointers in the final minutes and the Lakeland University women's basketball team held off Dominican University 70-65 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies weathered some nervous moments late to get back in the win column and snap a three-game losing streak. Lakeland won on Senior Day for four seniors on the team and improved to 10-11 overall and 7-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with four regular season games to play.

The Muskies never trailed in the game and led by 17 points in the second quarter, only for the Stars (5-16 overall, 1-11 NACC) to get all the way back within two in the fourth period. After a good-shooting first half, Lakeland struggled to just 16 points in a span of nearly 16 minutes and Dominican crawled within 55-53 with less than five minutes left in the game.

The Stars even had a possession with a chance to tie or take the lead but turned it over, and shortly after a Dominican foul Bartlett hit a three-pointer with 4:04 left to give the Muskies some breathing room. The Stars closed to 58-55 after a short jumper by Chenoa Moss, Lauryn Johnson (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) split two free throws and Shea hit another three with 2:28 to play to extend the lead back to seven at 62-55.

A steal and layup by Alexis Johnson (Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) with 1:11 left put the lead back to six at 64-58, and Lakeland closed the game out at the free throw line. Alexis Johnson, Jenna Caterino (Sr.-Stanton, Mich.) and Bartlett all made two free throws each in the final 35 seconds to close out the win.

The Muskies celebrated their four seniors before the game, with Caterino, Meryam Belbaz (Skokie, Ill.), Halle Boldt (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Gabbi Glatczak (Milwaukee, Wis.) all recognized. All four also started the game, including Glatczak, who recently had ACL surgery and took the court for the first time this season for the tip-off before exiting.

Lakeland started the game strong, opening with a 10-2 run on the way to a 23-point first quarter and a 23-11 lead after 10 minutes. The Muskies built their largest lead of the game late in the second period when Lauryn Johnson's layup made it 39-22 with 2:10 left in the first half, but Dominican finished the half with six straight points, including Lia Saunders hitting a jumper at the buzzer after rebounding a halfcourt shot by teammate Danielle Washington and making it 39-28 at the break.

Lakeland shot 51.5% in the first half (17 of 33), but Dominican refused to go away. The Stars cut the deficit to six in the third quarter, and in the fourth quarter scored eight straight points to get within two.

Boldt and Bartlett both scored 13 points each, with Boldt also adding nine rebounds. Alexis Johnson added eight points off the bench, Lauryn Johnson finished with seven points and seven rebounds and Caterino added seven points and six boards.

The Muskies hit just 27.6% (8 of 29) in the second half and finished shooting 40.3% (25 of 62). Lakeland hit 14 of 20 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Stars 46-40

Melissa Gomez led Dominican with 16 points. The Stars shot 35.9% (23 of 64), including 13 of 24 from the free throw line.

The Muskies go on the road for their next game Wednesday when they face NACC co-leader St. Norbert College at 7 p.m. in De Pere.
