WINTER HAVEN, Fla. –
Natalie Ziebell (
Fr.-New Holstein, Wis.) and
Lily Pettit (
Fr.-Rewey, Wis.) both earned their first collegiate wins and the Lakeland University softball team won twice Tuesday while playing in The Spring Games at the Diamond Plex.
The Muskies defeated Marywood (Pa.) University 3-0 in their first game and then handled Ohio Northern University 10-2 in five innings to sweep two games on the second day of their spring break trip. Lakeland rebounded from a pair of losses on Monday to improve to 2-2 on the season and on its Florida trip.
The Muskies received a gem of a pitching performance from Ziebell in their first game against Marywood (2-3 overall), which also marked the first win for first-year Lakeland head coach
Kayla Bryant.
In her second start, Ziebell threw a three-hit shutout, striking out one. The freshman recorded 13 outs via groundout and seven outs in the air, and in just one inning allowed a runner past first base, when the Pacers put runners at second and third with two outs in the fifth before a groundout back to Ziebell ended the inning.
Lakeland gave her all the run support she would need in the first inning.
Carlie Morrow (
Jr.-Menasha, Wis.) and
Sydney Meyer (
Jr.-Crown Point, Ind.) led off the game with singles,
Jacie Jones (Jr.-Prairie du Sac, Wis.) bunted the runners over, and a groundout by
Maddie Raske (
So.-Tinley Park, Ill.) drove in Morrow with the game's first run.
The Muskies wouldn't score again until the sixth inning when they tallied a pair of insurance runs. Jones walked with one out and Raske singled, and
Jordan August (
Sr.-Schererville, Ind.) followed with a single to drive in Jones.
Lexi Howard (
Fr.-Crown Point, Ind.) later delivered a two-out RBI single to drive in pinch runner
Peyton Harlow (
Jr.-LaPorte, Ind.) for the game's final run.
The second game would turn on the strength of one big inning, as a tie game quickly became a rout. With Lakeland and Ohio Northern's Polar Bears tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the fourth, the Muskies scored eight times, enough to end the game on the eight-run rule when ONU (1-5 overall) went down scoreless in the top of the fifth.
Lakeland sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth, with Howard starting the rally with a single and later hit a three-run triple. The first six batters of the inning reached base, including Meyer hitting a two-run double, and August added an RBI single. The Muskies also took advantage of a pair of Ohio Northern errors in the inning, and the game was blown wide open when Howard hit a bases-loaded triple to make it 10-2.
Meyer and Howard both finished with two hits each and Morrow, August, Harlow and
Abby Heitman (
Jr.-St. Francis, Wis.) all also drove in runs. In the circle it was Pettit making her first collegiate start and going five innings, allowing four hits and two runs with a strikeout. The Muskies also turned two double plays, including one in the fifth when Pettit speared a line drive and threw over to first to easily double up an ONU runner.
Lakeland has a day off from play Wednesday before returning with two games on Thursday. The Muskies will take on Beloit College at 11:15 a.m. Central time, 12:15 p.m. in Florida, and immediately following will take on Kean (N.J.) University. Both games will be played at Bartow Park in Bartow, Fla.
