LISLE, Ill. – Benedictine University scored two goals less than five minutes apart in the middle stages of the second half and the Lakeland University women's soccer team was defeated 2-0 Saturday afternoon in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The Eagles broke the ice in the 64th minute of a match that was scoreless for more than two-thirds of the full time. The loss left the Muskies still looking for their first win of the season, now at 0-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the NACC.
Benedictine (1-6 overall, 1-1 NACC) kept Lakeland on the defensive most of the match, finishing with a big 21-3 advantage in shot attempts. The Muskies stayed tied for more than a half, though, including
Ingrid Steinbock (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) making four saves in the first 45 minutes in goal. Lakeland's best chance in the first half came in the seventh minute, when
Lia Armstrong (
Jr.-Fort Wayne, Ind.) sent a ball through to
Malaya Sperber (
So.-Grafton, Wis.), who received it in traffic and shot just wide left of the goal.
The match was still scoreless until near the midway mark of the second half, when Natalia Ochab, against a packed in defense, looped a high shot with her left foot from 25 yards out left of the box. The shot dropped in just over the head of Steinbock and in the upper left corner to give Benedictine the lead.
The Eagles were on the attack again when a tripping call in the box far right of the goal and on the end line resulted in a penalty kick. Olivia Smycz converted the kick to put Benedictine ahead 2-0.
The Muskies' had two more shot attempts, the first on a free kick by
Mikayla Belasco (
Jr.-Muskegon, Mich.) and the second by
Ines Rodriguez (
Jr.-Newark, Calif.). The Eagles also would have more chances, and
Addi Reimer (
Fr.-Plymouth, Wis.) made four saves in the final 16:47 in goal.
Steinbock finished with six saves while Benedictine's Marissa Amador was credited with two saves in the shutout.
Lakeland continues an early road tour in the NACC schedule on Wednesday when it travels to take on Marian University at 7 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
