PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jaxson Dillon (
Sr.-Menasha, Wis.) and
Peyton Mrotek (
Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) combined for 37 points and seven of the Lakeland University men's basketball team's 11 three-pointers in a 66-60 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies held an opponent to a season low for points scored and defeated the Warriors for the first time since 2022 while improving to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland also finished with a split of the season series with WLC, which dropped to 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the NACC.
The teams posted similar shooting numbers with Lakeland hitting 43.4% to Lutheran's 40.0%, and the Warriors posted a slim advantage at the free throw line. The Muskies made hay from three-point range, though, hitting 11 of 33 from long distance (33.3%) and seemingly answering with a triple every time WLC started to get close.
Lakeland made seven three-pointers in the first half in breaking out to a 35-16 lead that included a 33-9 stretch over more than 11 minutes. The Muskies led 35-25 at halftime and never trailed in the second half, despite the Warriors closing within two points twice.
Wisconsin Lutheran trimmed the 10-point halftime deficit down to 46-44 after a bucket inside by Bryce Appel with 11 minutes, 49 seconds left, but Mrotek hit a three-pointer the next time down to stretch the lead back to five and start a brief 10-2 spurt that gave Lakeland a 10-point lead again.
The Warriors would chip away down the stretch and were within two when Lucas Anamdu scored to make it 59-57 with 1:39 left. The Muskies would answer again, this time with Dillon hitting a three just nine seconds later to make it 62-57. Lutheran would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Dillon scored 20 points, including making 4 of 9 from three-point range. Mrotek also scored 17, making three threes and also adding seven rebounds, and
Asanjai Hunter (
Sr.-Racine, Wis.) also added 13 points.
Emmitt Konieczny (
So.-Marshfield, Wis.) and
Gage Cornell (
Sr.-Manitowoc, Wis.) also added six points each, with both making two three-pointers.
Lakeland made 23 of 53 field goal attempts and also came up with 13 steals on defense while holding WLC to 22 of 55 shooting. The Warriors posted a 42-28 rebounding advantage but committed 20 turnovers and also made just 3 of 18 three-point attempts.
Appel led Wisconsin Lutheran with 18 points and added 11 rebounds. The Muskies' win came after the Warriors won the teams' first meeting this season 84-74 back on Dec. 6 in Wauwatosa.
The Muskies are home again Saturday to face Aurora University at 3:15 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
