MEQUON, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's volleyball team played well early but Calvin (Mich.) University came back to take a four-set win in the teams' non-conference match played Saturday afternoon at Concordia University Wisconsin's R. John Buuck Fieldhouse.
The Knights closed out a 16-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 win in a match played on a neutral site at Concordia Wisconsin. The teams faced off at Concordia in a match just scheduled Friday, after Lakeland's home triangular with Calvin and Maranatha Baptist on Friday was canceled due to the cold and Calvin's trip to CUW for a triangular on Saturday was initially shortened to one match after another visiting team canceled its travels to Wisconsin.
The Muskies (3-4 overall) got off to a flying start, hitting .348 in the first set to take an early lead in the match. The Knights would be even hotter the rest of the way, though, hitting .367 over the final three sets, including better than .400 in both the third and fourth sets.
Calvin's Daniel Rua and Brady Gudauskas both finished with 11 kills each, including Rua without an error in 20 attacks for a .550 hitting percentage. Justus Barbel added 10 kills and Gudauskas also tallied up five service aces for the Knights, who improved to 2-0 after also defeating Concordia Wisconsin in four sets earlier in the day.
Jakob Donohue (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led Lakeland with 10 kills and a .389 attack percentage and
Sage Xiong (
So.-Erie, Colo.) added eight kills. The Muskies finished hitting .172 with 37 kills and 16 errors in 122 attacks.
Chase Anderson (
Sr.-Hartford, Wis.) also totaled 28 assists and three blocks (one solo, two assisted) and
Eli Weinrich (
Sr.-Mequon, Wis.) added a team-high 12 digs plus two service aces. Xiong also posted nine digs and
Luke Schultz (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) added eight digs.
Lakeland next plays at home against North Park (Ill.) University at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
