Muskies take charge in second half to defeat Eagles for second straight victory

MADISON, Wis. – Parker Braun (Jr.-Brillion, Wis.) doubled up with a pair of career highs and Lakeland University took over a close game in the second half and went on to defeat Edgewood University 90-69 in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference men's basketball tilt Wednesday night at the Tood Wehr Edgedome.

The Muskies shot 55.6% in the second half and won their second straight game, this time posting their most convincing win of the season. Lakeland improved to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the NACC while dropping the Eagles to 1-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

The Muskies led 51-50 early in the second half before holding Edgewood scoreless for more than seven minutes. Lakeland scored 16 straight points in that stretch, including seven points from Braun, and a layup by Peyton Mrotek (Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) made it 67-50 with 9:45 left in the game.

Edgewood would get as close as nine points late when Logan Steffensmeier made a jumper with 4:21 left to cut the Muskies' lead to 74-65. Lakeland would step on the gas again the rest of the way, outscoring Edgewood 16-4 the rest of the game to win going away.

Edgewood got the jump early and led 25-14 when Payton Bowser hit a three-pointer with 11:43 left in the half. The Muskies battled back, though, and took their first lead of the game when Jaxson Dillon (Sr.-Menasha, Wis.) made a three-pointer for a 29-28 advantage with 4:28 remaining before halftime.

The teams went back and forth from there, and Edgewood led with a minute remaining in the period until Lakeland scored the final five points of the half. Asanjai Hunter (Sr.-Racine, Wis.) scored on a layup with 53 seconds in the half, and Adison Mittelstadt (Fr.-Mayville, Wis.) hit a three-pointer with five seconds left in the half to give the Muskies a 45-41 halftime lead.

Hunter finished with a game-high 23 points and added five rebounds and six assists. Mrotek scored 20 points with six rebounds and four assists and Braun added career highs with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Dillon and Emmitt Konieczny (So.-Marshfield, Wis.) also scored 11 points each.
