Figi reaches 1,000 digs, Muskies dispose of Regents in Saturday sweep

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Ryan Figi (Sr.-Hartland, Wis.) reached the 1,000 digs mark for her career and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team eased past Rockford University in three sets Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies dominated in all facets in a 25-8, 25-16, 25-14 win over the Regents to improve to 12-7 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland won its second conference match in less than 40 hours and won by sweep for the ninth time in its 12 victories this season.

Figi entered the match needing one dig for 1,000 digs in her career, and the senior libero achieved that mark early in the first set. She became the 17th player in program history to reach the 1,000-dig mark for a career and with 15 digs on Saturday has 1,014 digs in her Muskies career.

Lakeland played from ahead for virtually the entire match, trailing only three times total in the early stages of the first and third sets. The Muskies blew the first set open with a 15-1 run that included 11 straight points, including five service aces by Sydney Gay (Jr.-Rice Lake, Wis.), jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the second set, and had runs of 8-0 and 8-1 in the third set.

Lakeland hit .294 as a team with 39 kills and 14 errors in 85 attacks. The Muskies also served 11 aces and added five blocks while Rockford (5-11 overall, 1-4 NACC) hit -.014 as a team with 12 kills and 13 errors for the match.

Maleigha Kovalaske (Jr.-Ripon, Wis.) finished with 10 kills and Faith Baker (Jr.-Verona, Ill.) added eight kills in 10 attack attempts for an .800 hitting percentage. Laura Pearson (Jr.-San Diego, Calif.) also added four kills in seven attacks plus four blocks (one solo, three assisted) and Katie Westerholm (Fr.-Prior Lake, Minn.) finished with 20 assists.

Gay set a career high with five service aces and added 13 assists. Kovalaske also finished with three aces and Emily J. Hansen (Sr.-Kaukauna, Wis.) added two aces.

Ashley Mersch led Rockford with four kills and Leila Cooks finished with 12 digs.

Lakeland is home again for its next match Thursday against Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
