PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Ingrid Steinbock (
Jr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) made 11 saves to keep the Lakeland University women's soccer team in the game much of the way before Dominican University pulled away to defeat the Muskies 4-0 Saturday afternoon at John Taylor Memorial Field.
Lakeland played on defense much of the match but put forth a very respectable effort in its home finale and against one of the top teams in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The Muskies dropped to 4-11 overall and 3-6 in conference, while the Stars improved to 9-3-2 overall and 7-2 in the NACC.
Lakeland came in off an ugly loss to Milwaukee School of Engineering in its last game when the Raiders scored 12 goals, but the Muskies slowed Dominican significantly. Lakeland induced the Stars into committing 18 offsides infractions, and Steinbock made a number of excellent saves in one-on-one situations.
Dominican scored less than four minutes into the game when Tia Garr's long pass from the left rolled on the ground for several seconds until Kaylie Reeve received the ball right of the goal and shot and scored. The Stars added a second goal in the 16th minute when Azara Waite's free kick from 25 yards out was well placed over the head of Steinbock and inside the crossbar to make it 2-0, a score that would hold until halftime.
Dominican added a third goal just over 16 minutes after halftime after an unfortunate bounce for Lakeland. A defender's attempt to head away a Stars crossing pass instead deflected right to Grace Durante, whose shot caught Steinbock off balance and went behind the Muskies goalkeeper.
The Stars scored one more time with 14 minutes left in the game, as Rachelle Pinto received a pass leading her into a breakaway that she capitalized on scoring inside the left post.
Dominican finished with a 19-2 advantage in shot attempts, including 15 of its shots on goal.
Malaya Sperber (
Jr.-Cedar Grove, Wis.) and
Ashlynn Jimenez (
So.-Crown Point, Ind.) accounted for Lakeland's two shot attempts.
Alana Mrotek (
Fr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) also was a standout defensively for the Muskies helping to limit the Stars' shot attempts.
The Muskies finish the regular season with three games on the road, starting when they face St. Norbert College Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in De Pere.
