DE PERE, Wis. – St. Norbert College came out of the gates red-hot and the Lakeland University women's basketball team never recovered in an 82-58 loss to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference co-leaders Wednesday night at the Mulva Family Fitness and Sports Center.
St. Norbert guard Olivia Conway made five three-pointers in the first quarter as part of a 29-point opening frame for the hosts, and the Muskies fell to the Green Knights for the second time this season. Lakeland is now 10-13 overall and 7-8 in the NACC with two games remaining and likely needing to win both to earn a spot in the eight-team NACC Tournament.
St. Norbert opened the game on a 13-0 run and led 29-16 after one period and 47-21 at halftime. The Green Knights shot 65.5% (19 of 29) in the first half, including Conway scoring 15 points in the first quarter and 19 in the opening half.
The Muskies were ice cold from the start, shooting 21.9% (7 of 32) in the first half. Lakeland briefly warmed up at the end of the first quarter and cut an early 13-point deficit down to 17-9 after two free throws from
Alexis Johnson (
Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.), but SNC finished the first half on a 30-12 run before cruising through the final 20 minutes.
Johnson led the Muskies with 21 points, making 6 of 13 shots from the field and 8 of 12 from the foul line, and also added a game-high five steals.
Sadie Grabow (
So.-Bourbonnais, Ill.) also scored 12 points and
Sydney Nimsakont (So.-Glendale Heights, Ill.) added 10 points.
Jiaryatou Cisse (
Jr.-Harrison, Mich.) also chipped in five points and six rebounds.
Conway led St. Norbert with 23 points and six assists and Oakley Witteck added 13 points. The Green Knights finished shooting 58.6% (34 of 58), including 8-for-13 from three-point range.
The Muskies are on the road again Saturday when they travel to take on Concordia University Wisconsin at 1 p.m. in Mequon.
