PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) and
Colin Putchinski (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) combined for 25 kills and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team was dominant in a three-set sweep of Rockford University Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies rolled to a 25-19, 25-6, 27-25 win for their second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the week. Lakeland improved to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the NACC and moved to 5-2 all-time against the Regents, who dropped to 1-14 overall and 0-4 in conference play this year.
The Muskies just missed out on a season high for hitting percentage, attacking at a .402 rate with 41 kills and just eight errors. Lakeland topped the .400 mark for hitting percentage for the second time this season, having also hit .405 in its season-opening sweep of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University in January.
The Muskies shook off a slow start in the match's early stages to take full control, particularly in the latter stages of the first set and in the second set. Lakeland hit .500 (17 kills, one error) in the opening set, and then posted a .444 mark in the second set (15 kills, three errors), which included a 7-0 run to open the set and another 9-0 run to go ahead 17-2.
The Muskies substituted freely by the third set but still led much of the way and then made the plays late when Rockford closed in. The Regents led 23-22 after a kill by Nathan Simons, but Lakeland reached match point first at 24-23 and finally closed it out with a triple block at the net by
Joe Butterfield (
So.-Brookfield, Wis.),
Blake Schultz (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) and
Drake Schleihs (
Sr.-Appleton, Wis.).
Jakob Donohue (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also added seven kills in seven attacks for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage.
Chase Anderson (
Sr.-Hartford, Wis.) finished with 23 assists and
Blake Schultz added 12 assists.
Luke Schultz (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) added 14 digs and
Eli Weinrich (
Sr.-Mequon, Wis.) finished with three service aces.
Lakeland also held Rockford to a -.013 hitting percentage, with the Regents registering 18 kills and 19 errors. Josh Bowling paced the guests with five kills.
Lakeland is in action again Tuesday when it hosts Illinois Institute of Technology at 6 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium. The teams will resume their match that was suspended on Feb. 17 with IIT leading 1-0 in the match and the teams tied 18-18 in the second set.
