Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Raiders pull back away late to defeat Muskies

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Mason Dopirak scored 34 points for Milwaukee School of Engineering and the Lakeland University men's basketball team lost contact late in a 100-75 loss Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies slashed a 16-point deficit down to four points in the second half but went cold down the stretch and dropped to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Lakeland remains one-half game out of eighth place in the conference standings with four games remaining in the regular season, trailing Concordia University Chicago (5-8 NACC) in eighth in the fight for a spot in the NACC Tournament.

The Raiders (14-7 overall, 12-2 NACC) led from start to finish, opening the game on a 15-2 run and never trailing. MSOE led by many as 16 points in the first half at 46-30 and held a 48-35 lead at halftime before the Muskies fought back into the game early in the second half.

Jaxson Dillon (Sr.-Menasha, Wis.) hit a three-pointer, Peyton Mrotek (Sr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) drained a three and then converted a three-point play, and Max Justic (Fr.-Chicago, Ill.) hit two threes within the first 5 1/2 minutes of the second half. Justic then scored on a layup with 14:01 left to bring Lakeland within 58-54, its closest point since the opening minute of the game.

MSOE slowly pulled back away, and the lead reached double digits again when Carson Cordelli scored to make it 71-60 with 9:33 left in the game. The Muskies were still within ten points at 78-68 when Justic hit another three with 7:06 to play, but Lakeland would score just one field goal and seven points total over the final seven-plus minutes.

Dillon and Mrotek both scored 21 points each and Justic added a season-high 17 points for Lakeland, which shot 37.3% (25 of 67). The Muskies took well over half of their shots from three-point range, making 12 of 40 (30.0%) from long distance, but just one of their final 14 attempts in the second half.

Dopirak came in to the game as the No. 2 scorer in the NACC, and he made 11 of 20 shots form the field and 10 of 13 from the free throw line. He also added nine rebounds, part of MSOE's big 46-25 rebounding advantage in the game. Jonathan Burroughs also scored 21 points and added nine rebounds, Joey Jendusa scored 15 points off the bench and Cordelli added a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.

Lakeland is home again Saturday for Alumni Day, hosting Dominican University at 3:15 p.m. in the second game of a women's/men's doubleheader.
