PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jacie Jones (
Sr.-Prairie du Sac, Wis.) pitched 5 1/3 innings of scoreless relief in the first game, providing one of the few highlights of the day as the Lakeland University softball team lost to Ripon College twice Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.
The Red Hawks defeated the Muskies 4-3 in the first game and then rolled 13-0 in six innings in the second game to complete the sweep. Lakeland dropped to 10-6 overall this season, including three losses to Ripon, which improved to 10-5 on its season.
Pleasant spring temperatures and the pitching of Jones were among the only things that went right for the Muskies in their home opener. Ripon dominated the doubleheader in all areas, hitting well above its season averages at the plate while also holding Lakeland well below its season hitting marks entering the day.
The Red Hawks chased both Muskies starting pitchers by the third inning, including the opener when Jones came on for
Natalie Ziebell (
So.-New Holstein, Wis.) in the second inning after Carli Moldenhauer's home run put Ripon ahead 4-0 with two outs in the second. Jones came on and covered the final 5 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out four and walking one.
Lakeland worked its way back into the game at the plate, scoring twice in the bottom of the third on a two-out, two-run double by
McKenzie Staudinger (
Jr.-Manitowoc, Wis.). The Muskies got closer in the fifth when
Sydney Meyer (
Sr.-Crown Point, Ind.) singled to center with one out and after a Ripon error went all the way to third while
Callie Linders (
Jr.-Griffith, Ind.) came in to score.
Lakeland would miss a chance to tie the game in the fifth, though, stranding Meyer at third, and the Muskies would strand a runner at second in the sixth and went quietly with three infield outs in the seventh. Lakeland was held to five hits in the game, but that would be the high water mark of the day as the Muskies registered just two hits in the second game.
Red Hawks second game starter Alayna Sadowska entered the game with a 5.71 earned run average and 10 strikeouts to 20 walks in 21 1/3 innings, but the sophomore completely shut down Lakeland, allowing just two hits and striking out six for the complete game shutout. Ripon at the plate also finished with 15 hits and took advantage of three Muskies errors to score five unearned runs to win in six innings.
Linders and
Reyna Rupnow (
Jr.-Ixonia, Wis.) provided the lone hits for Lakeland. Rupnow provided another bright spot in the opening inning with a perfect through from left center to cut down Ripon's Ashlyn Schultz attempting to stretch a single into a double.
The Muskies will return to the field Saturday to take on Aurora University for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at home starting at noon.
