FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's volleyball team kept its hopes of advancing to postseason play alive for another day with a three-set sweep of Marian University Wednesday evening at Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Muskies continued their most successful season in seven years with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 win over the Sabres. Lakeland won its ninth match of the season and improved to 9-15 overall, its best record since winning 14 matches in 2019.
The Muskies also now are in control of their destiny in their attempt to qualify for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. Lakeland is 4-7 in the NACC and faces Concordia University Wisconsin on the road in Mequon at 1 p.m. in its regular season finale Saturday. A win would clinch the eighth and final spot in the eight-team tourney for the Muskies.
Lakeland was in control most of the way in defeating Marian (6-17 overall, 2-9 NACC) quickly in one hour, 13 minutes. The Muskies hit .253 as a team (38 kills, 15 errors) and had the advantage over the Sabres in every statistical category.
Lakeland never trailed in the first set and led much of the second set, threatened only when Marian came back from down 16-11 to take a 19-18 lead. The Sabres led again at 20-19 but the Muskies scored five of the next six points on the way to winning the set.
Marian also led in the early stages of the third set but Lakeland scored three straight points capped by a service ace by
Sage Xiong (
So.-Erie, Colo.) to go ahead 7-6. The Muskies pulled away late with a 7-1 run capped by a
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) kill for a 20-13 lead and never led by less than five points again.
Xiong finished with 12 kills and just one error in 21 attacks for a .524 hitting percentage, and also paced the team with two service aces and nine digs.
Colin Putchinski (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) also posted 10 kills and Davis-Troller added six kills.
Chase Anderson (
Hartford, Wis.) also finished with 25 assists and four block assists and
Jakob Donohue (
Milwaukee, Wis.) led the team with five block assists.
Adrian Calderon-Castro led Marian with 10 kills. The Sabres hit .084 as a team with 27 kills and 19 errors in 95 attacks.
