DE PERE, Wis. –
Callie Linders (
Jr.-Griffith, Ind.) hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning of the first game and the Lakeland University softball team went on to take both games of a doubleheader against St. Norbert College Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies rallied for a 3-2 win in the first game and then rolled to an 8-1 victory in the second game to extend their win streak to seven straight games, their second seven-game winning streak this season. Lakeland also moved into a tie for first place in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, improving to 17-10-1 overall and 9-3 in conference.
The Muskies trailed 2-1 going into the top of the seventh inning but
Lexi Howard (
So.-Crown Point, Ind.) opened the inning with a double and
Sam Marchant (
Jr.-Green Bay, Wis.) followed with a single and advanced to second on the throw to put runners at second and third with no outs. Linders soon after came up with one out and ripped a line drive into the gap in right center for a stand-up triple that scored Howard and pinch runner
Kaylee Hunt (
So.-St. Paul Park, Minn.) to give Lakeland its first lead of the game.
Jacie Jones (
Sr.-Prairie du Sac, Wis.) came on in relief in the seventh inning and St. Norbert (14-16 overall, 6-8 NACC) received a leadoff single by Molly Reichenberger, who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then went to third when Grendel Sprong reached on an error with two outs. Jones was able to get SNC cleanup hitter Allison Ardito to pop-up to shortstop to end the game, though, for her third save of the season.
Natalie Ziebell (
So.-New Holstein, Wis.) threw six innings and allowed eight hits and two runs with one strikeout for her eighth win of the season. Lakeland won despite being outhit 9-6 and trailing from the time the Green Knights opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 2-0.
The Muskies also fell behind briefly in the second game when St. Norbert scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first, but the rest of the game was all Lakeland. The Muskies scored three runs in the second inning and scored in five straight innings to pull away while also receiving an outstanding pitching outing from
Lily Pettit (
Rewey, Wis.). The sophomore threw a complete game and allowed just three hits and the single unearned run to win her fourth straight decision.
Abby Heitman (
Sr.-St. Francis, Wis.) went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs, including an RBI single to get Lakeland on the board in the second inning plus run-scoring singles in the third and sixth innings. Marchant also added a big hit with a two-out, two-run single on a 3-2 pitch in the fourth to put the Muskies ahead 6-1, and
Carlie Morrow (
Sr.-Menasha, Wis.) also added two hits and drove in two runs.
Lakeland piled up 13 hits in the second game and also worked St. Norbert pitchers for seven walks. Howard, Linders and
Maddie Raske (
Jr.-Tinley Park, Ill.) all added two hits each and every player in the lineup reached on a hit or a walk.
The Muskies are set to be home for games on Wednesday and Thursday for a pair of makeup dates.
