Brandon Nelson is in his second year as an assistant coach and assistant recruiting coordinator for the Lakeland baseball team. He coaches the team’s catchers as well as assisting with the hitting duties, and he also is the team's head varsity reserve coach.
In his first year with the Muskies, Nelson helped the team finish hitting .277 as a team-a 36-point increase from the previous season-and having four players hit above the .300 mark. Along with hitting, Nelson helped the catchers finish with a combined .987 fielding percentage with a total of only 3 errors in 220 chances as well as throwing out 30% of base stealers.
Prior to coaching at Lakeland, Nelson played professionally for two seasons for the Garden City Wind of the independent Pecos League. He finished with a career .250 batting average, and his first professional hit was a three-run home run. In his second and final season, he finished hitting .318 as the everyday starter behind the plate. He helped the team win the division title and reach the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
Nelson attended Central Christian College in Kansas and Phoenix College in Arizona, where he played collegiately. He holds numerous hitting records at his high school in Oklahoma, including in batting average, doubles, home runs and runs batted in. He currently resides in Plymouth with girlfriend Hanna.
