Logan Mann

Logan Mann is in his fifth year as head coach of the Lakeland baseball program.

Mann’s first four years with the Muskies have been marked by considerable improvement as well as extenuating circumstances, including handling the COVID-19 pandemic the last two seasons. Despite that, Lakeland enters the 2022 campaign off its most successful season in nearly ten years.

The Muskies finished 17-21 in 2022, their highest win total since 2012. Lakeland opened winning seven of its first 10 games, the program’s best 10-game start in 10 years. The Muskies outscored opponents 256-216 on the season and were close to a bigger year with eight losses by two runs or less.

Lakeland posted a 14-20 record in 2021, and its eight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victories were the most in conference since 2011. Playing a modified schedule that included no spring break trip due to the coronavirus pandemic and divisional play within the conference, Lakeland started strong in NACC North Division play, qualified for the NACC Tournament for the first time and held a winning record into the month of May.

The Muskies’ 2020 season was an abbreviated one that was stopped after just eight games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lakeland was off to a promising start, having posted a 2-6 record on its spring break trip to Florida that included four losses by one run or in extra innings, but the Muskies never had the chance to build on that as their season was canceled immediately after the spring trip.

Mann’s first year with the Muskies was one of laying the foundation for his program, and the team showed improvement as the season went on. Lakeland lost its first 13 games but from there finished 9-15 the rest of the way and posted a 7-15 record in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The seven conference wins tied for the most for the Muskies since 2011, and freshman pitcher Nathan Hemmerling became the first Lakeland first team all-conference player since 2012.

Mann came to Lakeland from NCAA Division III Southern Virginia University, where he won 139 games in nine seasons from 2010-18 at his alma mater. He led Southern Virginia when it was first a United States Collegiate Athletic Association program and through the process as it transitioned to Division III. His first four SVU teams qualified for the USCAA Small College World Series, including the program’s first-ever .500 season when it finished 21-21 in his first year.

Southern Virginia had its best season in program history in Mann’s second year, when in 2011 the Knights finished 30-10 overall and placed second in the USCAA. The 2011 Knights also set several offensive and defensive program records under Mann, including highest team batting average (.337), highest team slugging percentage (.509), most hits (415), most runs scored (311), most runs batted in (281), highest fielding percentage (.954) and lowest earned run average (3.60).

Mann also served in various administrative roles in the Southern Virginia athletic department. He spent two years as director of event management and gameday administrator, two more years as assistant director of compliance, and also a year as the director of athletic development.

Mann played for Southern Virginia from 2007-09, where he was a three-year starter as a pitcher and infielder. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southern Virginia in business management and Spanish, and received his master’s degree in sports management and administration from the United States Sports Academy.

Mann is married to wife Rebecca, and they have three children, Kinzley, Baylor and Amelia.
