Ryan Schopf is in his fourth year as head coach for the Lakeland men’s volleyball team.
Schopf stepped up as men’s head coach after serving as an assistant coach with the men's program in 2015. He also is the coach of the Muskies' women's volleyball program, where in the fall of 2018 he completed his fifth season.
Schopf has a 38-42 record over his first two years leading the Muskies men’s team. Lakeland finished 9-20 in 2018 and placed sixth in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a 4-8 mark. The Muskies posted a win over nationally ranked MSOE in March and were close to a much better record, finishing 2-6 in five-set matches.
Lakeland finished 12-13 in the 2017 season against another tough schedule, and at 9-10 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League tied for third place in the league’s Western Division.
In Schopf’s first year leading the men’s team, Lakeland finished 17-9 overall and 10-3 in the MCVL. The Muskies finished a solid third of 14 teams in the MCVL and qualified for the conference tournament for the first time while also making a conference tourney for the second time in the program’s three years of varsity status. Lakeland won seven consecutive MCVL matches at one point and also defeated two ranked teams on the season, and all nine of the team’s losses were to nationally ranked teams.
Schopf, a native of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and St. Norbert College graduate, came to Lakeland after spending the previous two years as an assistant women's volleyball coach at Jacksonville State University, an NCAA Division I school in Jacksonville, Ala. Schopf followed former University of Wisconsin-Green Bay assistant coach Joseph Goodson to Jacksonville State in 2011 when Goodson was named head coach. Schopf was the offensive coordinator for the Gamecocks and worked with the team’s setters. His other duties included practice planning, travel preparations, scouting and recruiting.
Prior to Jacksonville State, Schopf was the head girls volleyball coach at Luxemburg-Casco High School from 2008-11. He led the Spartans to a 128-29 record over four years, including a Bay Conference Championship, two Bay Conference Tournament titles and three WIAA regional titles.
Schopf also has 10 years of experience as a club coach in eastern Wisconsin. He was a coach with the Spartan Youth Volleyball Association in Luxemburg, coaching one of Luxemburg’s first club teams, and also coached with the Wisconsin Volleyball Academy in Appleton.
While at Jacksonville State, Schopf also received his master’s in sports management. He received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education in May 2004 from St. Norbert College, where he also was a member of the men’s golf team.
Schopf comes from a family that has been involved in volleyball in the state for years. His mother Roxanne Schopf has coached volleyball for more than 30 years at Sevastopol High School.
Schopf is married to the former Jena Bushman, who is also a native of Sturgeon Bay, and the couple welcomed their first child in May 2016, son Liam.
