Julie Mavity Maddalena is in her second year assisting with the Lakeland women’s tennis team.
A professor and the university chaplain at Lakeland, Julie has many years of experience playing and coaching tennis at the collegiate and high school levels. As a top 10 junior player in Texas, Julie won the state 4A high school doubles title her freshman year and returned again to finish in the top four in her senior year.
As an NCAA Division II college player at Abilene Christian University in Texas, she was a four-time doubles All-American and a one-time singles All-American. She won four regional individual championships and four regional team championships, earning her eight trips to the NCAA Division II individual and national championships. She was also a 3-time Academic All-American. Julie was a four-time all-Lone Star Conference selection and received the Women’s Tennis Wildcat Leadership Award and the Michelle King Women’s Tennis Achievement award.
Julie has been inducted into her high school Hall of Fame and also was inducted into Abilene Christian’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011. She has been coaching since college, including teaching private and group lessons for many years in Texas and Georgia and working as a tennis camp counselor in Colorado. She also coached the girls’ team at Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., and was the assistant coach for the women’s team Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., for two years, both of which saw them win the NCAA Division III national championship.
