Brian Herrmann (
So.-Hortonville, Wis.) scored his first goal of the season to snap a scoreless tie in the second half and the Lakeland College men's soccer team finished the home portion of its season with a 2-0 win over Marian University Tuesday afternoon.
Mirko Tadic (
Jr.-Santiago, Chile) also added his team-leading seventh goal as the Muskies snapped a three-game losing streak and got their second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win of the season. Lakeland also crept ahead of the Sabres in the conference standings, improving to 5-10-1 overall and 2-6 in the NACC while Marian fell to 5-11 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Herrmann scored the match's first goal at the 62:22 mark, finishing a play that involved four players and went the full length of the field, and did so quickly.
Goalkeeper
Austin Ganzke (
Sr.-West Allis, Wis.) handled the ball in the box and rolled it up ahead to
Brandon Barry (
Sr.-Lake Geneva, Wis.), who carried the ball up ahead near midfield. Barry then found Tadic, who after a couple touches found Herrmann on the right side. Herrmann was able to beat a defender and put the ball past goalkeeper Bryce Woldt for his first goal since Oct. 12 of last year.
Lakeland controlled much of the match, particularly the second half. The Muskies outshot the Sabres 12-3, including 8-1 in the second half, and held a 10-2 bulge in shots on goal.
The score was still just 1-0 late, though, when Lakeland added an important insurance goal. The Muskies went end-to-end quickly again, pushing it from the backline to the middle of the field to
Franco Herrera (
Jr.-Naucalpan, Mexico). Herrera then played it ahead to Tadic, who scored with 4:06 left in the match for his third goal in two matches.
That was more than enough the rest of the way, as Marian did not threaten again and Ganzke picked up his fourth shutout of the season by making just two saves.
The match was the final at home for four seniors, including Barry, Ganzke,
Kyle Bissen (
Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) and
Danny Drabik (
Madison, Wis.). All four saw action, as Ganzke and Bissen both started the match, Barry came on in the first half and played the rest of the way, and Drabik played late in the second half on the defense.
The Muskies close their regular season with three consecutive matches on the road, starting with a trip to face Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
