HANCOCK, Mich. – Six different players scored goals and the Lakeland College women's soccer team relieved some recent frustrations with a 6-0 win over Finlandia (Mich.) University Sunday morning in a non-conference match.
The Muskies scored in a pair of three-goal bursts in each half to 12-match winless streak and get their third win of the season. Lakeland improved to 3-15-1 this year and is now 6-0 all-time against the Lions, an NCAA Division III independent who dropped to 3-12.
The Muskies scored three times in the first half, with all three goals coming in a span of 6:35. Lakeland's three second half goals also came within 6:41 of each other.
Maddy Schone-Knoll (
Fr.-Roscoe, Ill.) scored first 21:08 into the match, assisted by
Stephanie Rock (
Sr.-Niagara, Wis.). An important play took place just 2:37 later, as Finlandia's Brierra Ruska was red-carded for a hard foul, and
Libby DeClark (
Jr.-Kingsford, Mich.) converted the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.
Lakeland scored again in the 29th minute as
Karen Hjelle (
So.-Malone, Wis.) finished a nice play for her second goal of the season.
Tiffany Fischer (
Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) and
Krystina Cook (
Sr.-Des Plaines, Ill.) both assisted on the play, and the Muskies took a 3-0 lead to halftime.
Fischer was involved again on the first goal of the second half, assisting
Becca Giessen (
Fr.-West Bend, Wis.), who scored her first collegiate goal at 61:16 to make it 4-0.
Ali Thompson (
Sr.-Plymouth, Wis.) and Cook also added goals over the next six-plus minutes, with Cook assisting the first goal and Rock adding her second assist of the day on the final goal.
Lakeland outshot Finlandia 36-3, peppering the Lions with 20 shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Jessica Carter (
Jr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) had to make just one save in the 81st minute to complete the shutout for the Muskies.
Finlandia's Adrianna Osuna made 14 saves in goal for the hosts.
Lakeland wraps up its 2014 season on Tuesday when it hosts Marian University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at 3:30 p.m.
