LISLE, Ill. – Benedictine (Ill.) University went on a 22-3 run in the first half to take control of the game on the way to a 68-39 win over the Lakeland College women's basketball team Saturday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.
The Muskies shot just 30.6% for the game, hitting just 15 of 49 field goal attempts, including 5 of 23 in the first half (21.7%). Lakeland dropped its second straight and is now 2-5 overall and 2-3 in the NACC.
The Eagles (4-5 overall, 4-0 NACC) led 10-7 after a short jumper by
Rachel Stankevich (
Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) with 14:17 left in the first half when the game turned. The Muskies scored just three points over the next 10:59, committing 10 turnovers in that span and missing eight of their next nine shots.
Benedictine pounced quickly in that stretch, hitting seven straight shots at one point to build a 22-point lead. The Eagles led 36-17 at halftime and never let Lakeland back into it in the second half, leading by at least 20 points for the final 14 minutes.
Benedictine made 29 of 56 shots for the game (51.8%) and also finished with a 41-28 rebounding advantage. The Eagles also had a 40-12 advantage in points in the paint.
Trista Barron (
Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) led the Muskies with 15 points, including three three-pointers. Stankevich added six points, while no other Lakeland player had more than five.
Tiersa Gillie (
Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) led the team with six rebounds.
The Muskies return to the court Thursday when they host Concordia University Chicago at 5 p.m. in the first game of a women's/men's doubleheader at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
