Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lakeland gets first win by taking down NACC power Wisconsin Lutheran

Bailey Grayvold (So.-Norway, Mich.) scored a career-high 24 points and the Lakeland College women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season in grand style, knocking off Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference power Wisconsin Lutheran College 69-67 at the Woltzen Gymnasium Wednesday night.

The Muskies defeated the four-time reigning conference champions and snapped WLC's 20-game winning streak in conference games. Lakeland rallied from an early 12-point deficit and also bested the Warriors for the first time since 2012, improving to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the NACC.

The Muskies were nearly flawless in the second half, shooting 58.3% and committing just three turnovers. Grayvold scored 19 of her 24 points in the second half and finished the game making 7 of 10 shots, including 4 of 6 from three-point range, as well as 6 of 7 free throw attempts.

Lakeland took the lead for good on a short jumper by Grayvold making it 64-63 with 2:13 left, but the game went down to the final seconds. The Muskies were ahead 68-63 after two free throws by Grayvold with 28 seconds left, but the Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3 overall, 1-1 NACC) scored on a putback and then a layup after a steal to trail by just one with nine seconds left.

Kayla Clark (So.-West Bend, Wis.) hit one of two free throws with 7.5 seconds to play, and after a timeout the Warriors had a final chance. Bethany Unkefer went coast to coast and had a challenged layup attempt with two seconds left roll off the rim, and the rebound was tapped away while time expired.

The Muskies received outstanding performances from a number of players. Clark finished with 11 points and five assists with just one turnover at the point guard position, and as a team Lakeland committed just eight turnovers. C.J. Usadel (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists before fouling out.

The Muskies also did an excellent job on WLC star Kristen Schulz. The 6-foot-3 post averaging 23 points and 15 rebounds per game got her averages, scoring 23 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Nine of her rebounds were on the offensive end, many coming on her own misses as she shot just 8 of 22 from the field. Maddy Doll (Fr.-Florence, Wis.) and Rachael Millner (Jr.-Mundelein, Ill.) stood tall on defense in the post, and Millner also added 10 points off the bench, hitting 5 of 7 shots while guarded by Schulz.

Lakeland shot 44.6% for the game (25 of 56) and hit 10 of 23 from three-point range. The three-ball helped the Muskies rally after trailing by double figures early on.

The Warriors led most of the first half and took their biggest lead at 22-10 with 9:04 left in the first half, but climbed back in with three straight triples. Clark hit one and Lexie Greenheck (Jr.-Oostburg, Wis.) came off the bench to hit a pair, her second putting Lakeland clearly back in the game at 24-19.

Wisconsin Lutheran finished shooting 37.3% for the game (22 of 59), including just 34.4% in the second half (11 of 32). The Warriors out-rebounded the Muskies 44-30 but committed 14 turnovers.

The Muskies are in action again on Saturday when they host Dominican (Ill.) University at 2 p.m.
