Muskies stifle Stars for second straight win

The Lakeland College women's basketball team was dominant defensively, limiting Dominican (Ill.) University to 18.8% shooting for the game in an easy 72-42 win Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies held the Stars to just nine made field goals in 48 attempts for the game. That total included just three makes in 25 tries in the first half (12.0%) as Lakeland built an early 23-3 lead and cruised to its second straight win and moved to 2-1 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Muskies (2-3 overall) held the Stars (0-7 overall, 0-3 NACC) to three points in the first 13 1/2 minutes as Dominican hit one of its first 19 field goal attempts. Lakeland went on to lead 35-15 at halftime and continued building the lead in the second half, leading by as many as 35.

Offensively, the Muskies shot received contributions from throughout the lineup. Bailey Grayvold (So.-Norway, Mich.) led the team with 13 points and was 5-for-5 from the field, while Rachel Stankevich (Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) added 10 points, all in the first half. Kayla Clark (So.-West Bend, Wis.) and Gaby Cappaert (Jr.-Stephenson, Mich.) both added nine points each, and in all 14 of Lakeland's 15 players scored in the game.

Stankevich, Maddy Doll (Fr.-Florence, Wis.) and Tiersa Gillie (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) also added seven rebounds each. The Muskies finished with a 42-38 rebounding advantage and also committed just 11 turnovers.

Allie Tapanes led Dominican with 12 points while Danielle McGruder added 11 points off the bench.

The Muskies are home again Tuesday night when they host NACC rival Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m. at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
