Muskies come out on fire in convincing win at Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Lakeland College women's basketball team got off to a scorching-hot start, scoring the first 13 points of the game on its way to an easy 70-41 win at Dominican (Ill.) University Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum.

Bailey Grayvold (So.-Norway, Mich.) scored 17 points and the Muskies received contributions throughout the lineup in leading from start to finish. Lakeland won its second straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game and is now 4-6 in league play and 4-10 overall.

The Muskies were superbly efficient in the game's first 11 minutes, scoring on 15 of their first 19 trips on the offensive end. Lakeland made 13 of its first 20 shots and built leads of 13-0 and 17-2, and eventually went ahead 32-15 with 9:37 left in the first half after a layup by Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.).

The Muskies scored on second chances following offensive rebounds on five of those early possessions and would go on to finish the game with 20 second-chance points on 21 offensive rebounds, which were part of a big 48-30 rebounding edge.

Lakeland continued to build its lead throughout, leading 40-23 at halftime and then notching the first seven points of the second half. The Stars (1-13 overall, 0-9 NACC) never got closer than 18 points the remainder of the game, and the lead grew as large as 33 points when Callie Olson (Jr.-Middleton, Wis.) hit the second of two free throws to make it 70-37 with 1:20 left.

Grayvold and Hilton (10 points off the bench) were the only Muskies to score in double figures, but all 12 Lakeland players dressed for the game played at least 10 minutes. Rachel Stankevich (Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) added nine points and nine rebounds, Trista Barron (Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) also scored nine points and 11 Muskies scored in the game.

Lakeland also was outstanding defensively throughout, limiting the Stars to 28.0% shooting (14 of 50). Dominican was just 2-for-16 from three-point range (12.5%) and also committed 22 turnovers.

The Muskies are on the road again for their next game Wednesday when they travel to face Alverno College in Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
