Illinois Institute of Technology scored three goals in a span of 4:51 in the first half and despite a second half rally the Lakeland College women's soccer team never could come all the way back in a 4-2 loss Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match.
The Muskies fell behind 3-1 less than 21 minutes into the match and played from behind the rest of the way in dropping to 4-11 overall. Illinois Tech improved to 5-1-1 in its last seven matches and is now 6-4-3 overall this year.
The Muskies scored first when
Mimi Pulido (
So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) notched her 12th goal of the season with an assist from
Stephanie Figueroa (
Fr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) just 5:26 into the match. IIT responded with the next three goals, though, with Adrianna Maron opening the scoring for the Scarlet Hawks at 15:41. Kristen Barrett put the guests ahead just over three minutes later, and Roxanne Myers converted a penalty kick at 20:32 to make it a 3-1 game.
The Muskies picked up their play in the second half, with
Taryn Allen (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Tiffany Fischer (
So.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) both putting shots on goal early in the half against IIT goalkeeper Jessica Park. Lakeland finally was rewarded at 68:22 when Figueroa scored unassisted for her fourth goal of the season.
The Muskies were unable to gain the equalizer, though, and the Scarlet Hawks added an insurance goal in the final minute when Barrett scored on a breakaway with 15 seconds remaining.
Illinois Tech outshot Lakeland 14-10 for the match, though the teams were even in the second half with six shots each.
Melissa Noll (
Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and
Jessica Carter (
Sr.-Schaumburg, Ill.) again split time in goal, with Noll making two saves in the first half and Carter turning away four shots in the second.
The Muskies are home again Wednesday when they welcome Marian University for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at 3:30 p.m.
