Eagles double up on Muskies in Saturday soccer action

MADISON – For the second straight game, the Lakeland College men's soccer team outshot its opponent by a wide margin but couldn't push enough goals across, losing to Edgewood College 4-2 on Saturday.

The Eagles later went on to complete a sweep of the day's matches, as Edgewood won the battle of the two schools' women's teams by an 8-0 margin. The Muskies' men's team is now 2-13 overall and 1-6 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, while the women's squad is now 4-13 overall and 1-6 in the NACC.

Zac Kline (Jr.-Luxemburg, Wis.) and Franco Herrera (Sr.-Naucalpan, Mexico) both scored goals in an entertaining men's match. Kline deposited a rebound off a shot by Charles Apostolik (Fr.-New Castle, Colo.), scoring his second goal of the season while Apostolik was credited with an assist on the goal that tied the match at 1-1 in the 21st minute.

The Eagles built a 3-1 lead at halftime and held it into the 65th minute, when Herrera stole the ball from a defender and shot from 20 yards out, scoring his third goal of the season. Lakeland was unable to get the equalizer, though, and Edgewood added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to close the scoring.

The Muskies lost despite a heavy 24-13 advantage in shot attempts. Mirko Tadic (Sr.-Santiago, Chile) attempted seven shots (four on goal) and Apostolik and Herrera both added four shots each.

The Lakeland women's team had a rough day, or more specifically a rough half. Edgewood scored seven of its eight goals in the first half, including four goals in a span of 3:21.

Alisha Nolden scored a hat trick in the first half while Taylor Pampuch added a goal and two assists.

Mimi Pulido (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) finished with four shots, three on goal, as the Muskies generated six of their seven shots in the second half.

Both Lakeland soccer teams face Milwaukee School of Engineering on Thursday in their next matches, with the women's team hosting the Raiders at 3:30 p.m. and the men's match taking place in Milwaukee at 7 p.m.
