The Lakeland College men's soccer team played a strong first half but Aurora (Ill.) University rallied with four goals in the final 45 minutes for a 5-2 win Saturday afternoon on Senior Day for the Muskies.
The Spartans scored four times in the final 35 minutes and took the lead for good in the 65th minute, staying among the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference leaders by improving to 6-1-2 in league play (8-6-2 overall). Lakeland dropped to 2-15 overall and 1-8 in conference play, but not without putting a scare into the visitors.
The Muskies kept the game a scoreless draw through 34 minutes before breaking the ice.
Mirko Tadic (
Sr.-Santiago, Chile) pushed it ahead to
Charles Apostolik (
Fr.-New Castle, Colo.), who outraced the goalkeeper to the ball and tapped it into the empty net for his second goal of the season.
Aurora responded with a goal less than two minutes later from Collin Foreman, but Lakeland responded right back just 2:13 before halftime. Tadic took a corner kick from the left side, and his pass into the box was deflected into the goal by defender
Garrett Jahnke (
So.-Howards Grove, Wis.), who scored his first career collegiate goal.
The Spartans tied it up just over 10 minutes after halftime on a goal by Kyle Pierson. Angel Barajas then scored the go-ahead goal unassisted at 64:10 of the match, and Jordan Schure added another unassisted tally nine minutes later. Jacob Goehring added an insurance goal in the 80th minute.
Lakeland played Aurora evenly in the field, with the Spartans holding only slim advantages of 10-8 in shot attempts and 9-8 in shots on goal. Zach McFarland made six saves for Aurora, while
Thomis Mannebach (
So.-Florence, Wis.) saved four shots for the Muskies.
The match was Senior Day for five Lakeland players: Tadic,
Franco Herrera (
Naucalpan, Mexico),
Logan Massey (
New Franken, Wis.),
Bradley Schwartz (
Forestville, Wis.) and
Nick Thompson (
Milwaukee, Wis.).
The Muskies have one final match to close out the season and will host Concordia University Wisconsin Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
